It's been a rough couple of days for us. We know we have to stop Harley's suffering. My wife is a wreck.

He has a large tumor in his abdomen that has finally gotten to the point were it prevents him from getting around like normal. Harley is almost 16.

We gave him the best we could. This is so hard.
Shit, dude.
So sorry to hear that.

Our boy is no longer suffering now. That's what I keep reminding myself. I'm just crushed right now.

The wife and I are going to take his ashes out to his favorite island so he can be there forever.

Thanks so much for the kind words guys. I don't know why, but posting about it in this thread has been therapeutic for me. Your words have been very helpful as well.

My Wolf/Malamute mix Sammy died in the living room in 98. We then got an American Eskimo named Zachary. I had to have him put down two years ago. Those two dogs are still with me in spirit. Now I can talk to my wife about the funny things they did without becoming depressed. But it takes time to get there.
Will lift up a prayer for you and yours today that you all may find some comfort and peace.

this was Nate, my dog for over 14 years. half golden, half chow. absolutely clueless to "sit", "down", "stay" or any other "dog command". however, if you talked to him like a person, he'd do whatever you asked. (Nate's favorite line was "wanna get some nuggets at wendy's?") -----he couldn't stand mcdonalds nuggets.
he thought snow was the greatest invention ever...............he disliked water (rain) though.
this past january, his heart was willing, but his body could no longer do as he wanted it to do. when he could no longer go up the ramp into the house i finally had to put him to sleep. the vet thanked me for not dragging it out after getting the results back from a growth on his mouth that were positive.
i watched him kick the snot out of a raccoon once, but as you see below, he was a big warm bed for our new cat.

You should put that picture of him with a whole fish in his mouth on your mantle. Seriously.
Wish there was something else I could say, but I know there isn't.

I will say this - next week'll be six months since we put Rox down, and now when I think about her, I'm more happy than sad, just remembering what a great dog she was.

Now for a happy story. I posted a few weeks back (see previous post) about getting a new dog, a rescue named Shadow.
How Scott, who'd had him for two months, and really loved him, had to give him up 'cuz his girlfriend said three dogs was enough.
So we take him, have him 3 days, and he's a great cool dog, and the morning of the 4th day, Mari's walking him and runs into his girlfriend with his other 3 dogs.
Shadow goes absolutely apeshit seeing his buds again, (there are such things as 'pack dogs'), and the girl friend says"Scott really misses him, and ....maybe I made a mistake, and.... (we know where this is going).
Mari comes home in tears and what do I think about giving him back to Scott and I call Scott and....

Long story shorter, the dog's where he should be. See pic below - Shadow with his buds.

PART_1448496335622_IMG_20151112_124844.jpg

So we will be getting a new dog in January - don't know what yet - but happening way sooner that it otherwise would have (with Mari), 'cuz of Shadow.

Man I am sorry to hear this G, but he isnt suffering anymore, and that is a good thing. I know seeing Harley in pain hurt you also, but you will heal over time, and he would have just gotten worse.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Selassie. Just know that he's in a much better place and no longer in pain.

interesting night with my furry kids last night.

Since Mickey is old, he can't hold it anymore and often has to go out in the middle of the night and do his business. So last night around 2 or so he started pacing a bit and I crawled out of bed and opened up the slider on the deck and headed to the bathroom myself.

I heard him start barking and then a yelp, and Bella went outside and starting barking and going crazy. I ran outside to see what the commotion was and lo and behold, they had cornered a skunk that had crawled under the chain link fence we have around the back yard. After a few minutes somehow the skunk got back under the fence and escaped, but not before spraying both dogs, and man they got it good!

After giving them both baths and showering myself, finally got back to bed around 4-4:30 or so. Thank goodness it is raining here today so I have the day off.

Hmm...I've just been wondering one thing. As you guys know, I'm in a wheelchair, and I probably will be for the rest of my life. I was thinking of adopting a dog (because I love those older dogs, and I don't know any puppy breeders) and training them to be a support dog for me when I can get a more comfortable chair and stay up for longer periods of time in that chair. My problem - aside from money - is this: I don't know what kind of dog would make a good support dog. I don't just want a support dog; I want a friend. Is there any sort of temperament I should be looking for? Can any dog be a support dog?

Personally, I'd recommend a Lab or Lab-mix. Easy going and smart. Lots of rescues out there as well. Good height for you as well as you're in a chair, (unless you want a lap dog).

Nah, I don't need a lap dog at all. Problem is that there really isn't a backyard or something, but I just miss having a dog. Was actually thinking of, maybe a Rottweiler mix or something. Rottweilers are extremely intelligent; they're supposed to be amongst the top five smartest dogs. Good height for me, good temperament, etc. That or a pit, Doberman, or German. I know, they're not always the best, but I just love those types of dogs, and I think that they could be good support dogs, if given a chance.

Didn't think you would - all the dogs you named are great. PULL THE TRIGGER!

Heck - my black lab reached up on the table last night and slipped my son's burger right off the bun. He was in deep doo doo and yet he still managed those puppy eyes. Even at their worst, dogs give you the warm and fuzzies. And virtually without fail, your dog no matter what breed, will ALWAYS be happy to see you and listen to you in your darkest moments.

Give Cooper lots, LOTS of exercise. They get bored when they're not sleeping...

Yes, he managed this all by himself.
