(CBS) Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary will return to the coaching ranks by working with the Rams this season, he said in an interview on 670 The Score on Tuesday morning.

Singletary will work on the defensive side in an advisory role for a franchise that recently relocated to Los Angeles. Singletary has been out of coaching in the NFL since working as the linebackers coach for the Vikings from 2011 to 2013. In February 2013, Singletary interviewed for the Rams’ defensive coordinator job but didn’t get it.

Singletary was the 49ers’ head coach from 2008-’10, compiling an 18-22 record.

Singletary was a leading figure on the 1985 Bears defense, which led the team to its lone Super Bowl title. Singletary mentioned his new coaching position during an interview reflecting on the death of Buddy Ryan, the defensive coordinator on that team and a father figure to Singletary.

Always liked him (except when he was a niner) and figured he would resurface somewhere. I think this is a solid addition and could help Alec in this transition a great deal.

I'm guessing he's being brought in to coach up the inside linebackers. IIRC the Rams' LB coach is Frank Bush, a long time NFL assistant coach so I doubt Singletary is replacing him, though one never knows do they?

Or Mike Singletary is coming on staff to make ready to replace Fish in a year or so....

.Heh!! well somebody had to say it!!!!

I think this is a great signing. More toughness and accountability on the Defensive side.

Now how about Manning to "assist" our offense?

'Singletary will work on the defensive side in an advisory role'. The guy knows football and has passion for the game. This is a good move that can only help us if anything.

I hope this is what he was hired for.Just let him tutor Alec all year long.

I always liked Singletary, he just seems like a real decent guy. There is a piece on NFL network right now about Buddy Ryan and Singletary had a lot to do with Buddy in his last years. Hoping the chemistry is there given Fisher and Singletary were Bears teammates.

The dude is a motivator to say the least.

Enjoy his passion and think he can bring a good perspective to the linebackers.

Hey Mike. Keep your pants up m-kay?

My hope is that he teaches Tree how to be a badass in the middle. Other than that, not sure what he brings. I definitely don't want him as a head coach some day.
