One of the major reasons that the Los Angeles Rams hired Sean McVay was because of the way he interacted with Jared Goff. Goff again in an interview with Dani Klupenger on the hiring of McVay, kept utilizing his favorite adjective “excited.” Suffice it to post, McVay has his work cut out for him and he needs to ensure to hire a QB Coach that can be a Goff confident if the Rams truly have their Field General of the future.

No reason to put the draft choice under the microscope again, it is obvious to everyone that Carson Wentz was more pro ready then Goff. Many tried to inform me that coming from a shot gun offense to a pro-style offense transition was overrated, but that is the furthest from the truth because Goff had not taken snaps under center even in High School and it was obvious from day one he was not comfortable doing that and is the very reason why, it took him that long to make the transition and why he sat on the bench for several games.

Goff although being touted as bright (38 on the wonderlic) was a sociology major at Cal and IMO that is not an aggressive major add in the question of where the sun rises and sets and IMO, Goff is not sharp. There is a difference between smart and sharp and right now Goff to me does not come off sharp.

Now I understand he did not have the best set of circumstances last season, but moving forward there are going to be no more excuses. He has an offensive QB Whisperer that has been trained for this type of gig and there is no debating that he made Kirk Cousins better so now we get to see if in essence Goff has what it takes to be worthy of the ransom the Rams traded to move up to draft him.

It won’t take long because we will know on draft day if McVay truly believes that Goff has the makeup to be a quality quarterback in the NFL. If the Rams draft a QB in the 4th round for example somebody like a Chad Kelly and they spin it that you always draft a QB if you can, well, in that, we will be able to read between the lines.

Again IMO, the only game where Goff showed me anything was in the New Orleans game, every other game besides being able to take a hit, he showed me nothing and believe me, if he showed anything I would post about it because I want him to be great. Moving forward no more excuses, McVay will be tasked with improving the number one overall draft choice to where he can actually be the Quarterback of a winning team because at this moment Jared Goff’s overall record in the NFL is 0-7, that’s right 0-7.

Now again I don’t question Goff’s desire or toughness, but I want to see him not only in the film room, but also in the weight room because he does not have NFL body. Many have posted that McVay is the type of coach that can bring out the best in Goff because he’s more of a “Self-Discovery” type of guy then drilling and calling out the player. Well, we are about to see how this unfolds because to this point, IMHO, Goff has not showcased much and I’m anxious to see with McVay that indeed it was the cast and the coaching more than the player that might have been overhyped because of the California Connection.

Just a few for reference:

Kirk Cousins 6'3" 210 lbs
Matt Ryan 6'4" 217 lbs
Eli Manning 6'4" 218 lbs
Andy Dalton 6'2" 220 lbs
Aaron Rodgers 6'2" 225 lbs

Goff started the year at 6'4" 215 lbs and by reports was up to 225lbs when he started. Not everybody is going to be a 240lbs QB like Luck, Ben, Flacco or Cam.

Lol, you are so wrong that it's funny. Correlation and causation are two different things. What you're saying is that because he doesn't know where the sun sets or rises, it somehow doesn't make him sharp.

I'm not saying, I'm posting and yes that does concern me...Goff's responses to me does not come of natural, everything he says, sounds rehersed Everything he says, seems rehersed. Again that is JMHO and it's was not only that statement. When he's interviewed, he repeats what he says all the time..."I'm excited." for example, that is just how I perceive him and again I'm not saying he might not have know the answer of where the sun rises and sets, however, he was unsure and chose not to answer the question, which IMHO concerns me and did not want to give the wrong answer, which is concerning.

Although I have similar concerns, you also have to factor in his youth. He is about 2 years younger than Wentz and when jumping to QB in the NFL, that is like dog years.

I understand that, but small hands, feet and neck I unlike others not sure if there is there is opportunity to get bigger. I just hope the next Strength & Conditioning Coach factors in nutrition as well because that is what Goff needs IMHO. And I don't need to be reminded of his enzyme deficiency.

The average height of NFL QB in 2014 was 6' 2".....te exact same as MLB pitchers by the way.
Listed weights can be tricky because they never seem to update them.
I would be interested to know Goff's big lift numbers.
He could certain gain weight. Going from 215 to 230 would only help if it was based in power/strength development.

I buy that physically, not mentally. He had more starts at the collegiate level then Wentz and faced much tougher competition, that is why some preferred Goff over Wentz for the level of competition and career starts.

His win loss record means nothing. Same as it didn't matter for Bradford.
I agree Goff should probably get bigger and stronger. But, the biggest thing he can do to protect himself in my opinion is not hold the ball. Half the sacks he took vs Arizona were on him. A new HC, OC and QB coach....this will all factor in heavily with his development in this regard.

It's weird to reply to my own comment, but this got me thinking. Let us consider McVay, by all accounts a guy who should not carry himself as well nor know as much as he seems to at such a young age. Is the problem all along that we were expecting Goff to be similarly of advanced maturity?

This next season should show us a lot.

I actually think a new OL Coach will factor in much more in his development or lack there of, IMHO.

Even in the McVay interview when they talked about his meeting with Goff in the film room all he said about Goff was I like his disposition. Nothing about him breaking down film nothing about him being "sharp", I think this is a valid concern about goff

I can't argue with anything you've stated here, Den. IMHO Goff hasn't yet passed the eye test, I'll believe it when I see it.
Perhaps it's a defense mechanism on my part because I have burnt MYSELF so many times over the years with this team. Always thinking (hoping and praying) that things were better than they really were. Blind optimism that inevitably comes crashing down once the ball starts being hiked.
The reality is that Goff has looked terrible so far, regardless of the circumstances.
Hope the new regime can work miracles, because it will take at least a small one to right this offensive ship.

Eh, you have comfirmation bias. I'm not going to entertain this any further.

Speculation with this kind of stuff is tough.
If he stood there and shrugged his shoulders he would be criticized. If he was completely honest he would be critizised. He he is rehearsed and polished he is critizised.
We all have different things we view through our own lense. I don't like "rah-rah" guys. A bunch of fist pumping and screaming for the camera....phony to me.
Overall, despite not playing well, I think Goff handled himself well. Versus Arizona when he was waving the punt team off, before the fake punt, says some things to me. He is engaged in the game. Trying to win and frustrated. Those are all good things.
I think in terms of smarts and desire he is fine. The more "rubber meets the road" stuff.....footwork, release point, ability to get rid of the ball, thy will have a lot to do with his success or lack of next year.

Diffetent pieces of the same puzzle. The OL coach hire will be a big one and could go along way to solving a whole host of problems.
Goff holding the ball and being late on throws is not an OL issue though. That is a bi product of his inexperience and weaknesses.

No bias, how do you think he played this year? Again the team around him was bad, but what did you see besides being able to take a hit, that provides some hope of optimism?

It does make him incurious about a daily natural event. It showed that he never cared to ask the question or to figure it out. We all do similarly about a subjects we care nothing about...

The fact that he didn't pick up the offense as quickly as we all hoped is more important than the fact that he didn't know where the sun rises and sets - although neither one is a notch in the old intelligence belt - but he is, after all, just a kid. Let's give him a fresh "rookie" season with a real scheme to work with and see how he does.
