Twenty-seven games into his coaching career, Sean McVay has been labeled a coaching genius. As true Ram fanatics, it drives us crazy when he does things like he did Monday night, passing in the final moments when we all thought he should be running the ball and the clock. After listening to him explain his reasoning (the Chiefs has 11 in the box), his logic seems to make perfect sense, proving, once again, that he knows more about football than I do. True, he's just a young coach still learning from his mistakes but, as Ram fans, we have to take a step back and remember that he's just in his second year as a head coach. What he has had to deal with in the last two weeks with the shooting, the fires, and the move from LA to Colorado Springs and back is truly amazing. The fact that his team put on one of the most exciting games in history cements his place, in my mind, as a truly great coach. Think about this...we are 10-1 and looking for things to complain about. Things could be worse. But how does McVay's first 27 games compare to other great men who coached this game or are still coaching?

I've put together a list (see attachment) of how legendary coaches fared in their first 27 games. Only the venerable George Halas put together a more impressive won-loss percentage, rolling up wins against the feared Moline Universal Tractors, the Kewanee Walworths, and the Minneapolis Marines among others while was coaching the Decatur Staleys way back in 1920. In regards to his contemporaries, McVay's 78% winning percentage is only approached by that of Mike McCarthy who won at a 67% clip during his first 27 games. My point is we Ram fans have much to be thankful for this season. Whether we win it all or not, this regime is just in its infancy. Hopefully, there will be many more seasons of success to come.

FYI: My source for this information was https://www.pro-football-reference.com. They have boxscores and even more on every game (almost) ever played. If you're a true fan, you'll get lost in it reliving legendary games;-)

Cool!

Seriously though, I think it's pretty neat to be tied with Barry Switzer at 21-6.

Yeah, it is the weirdest thing that this fan base cant just fucking enjoy winning.
I used to roll my eyes every time somebody would bitch about Martz use of time-outs. Despite his genius offense bringing us a worst to first SB win, another appearance and loads of wins and points, there were so many fans demanding to fire the guy... I am betting that Linehan, Haslett, Vitt, Spagnuolo and Fisher isn't what they envisioned...

Honestly, I think being a fan of this team over most of the last decade has been a very nice fit for the perpetually concerned, chronic complainers and negative Nancies.

Martz's ego was his downfall. Fans caught on to his stubbornness quick. While I might disagree with something McVay does here or there, he hasn't shown anything resembling an ego. Quite the opposite of Martz in that regard, actually.

I was surprised not to see Bill Walsh on that list. After some quick research I found that he went 5-22 in his first 27 which would put him at the bottom of this list. The reason I thought of him is because Shula is near the top of the list and Walsh said he would never catch Shula for total wins because Shula started so young. Here’s to McVay surpasses Shula in total wins and Super Bowl victories all with the Rams.

Martz's 1st two seasons he went 10-6 And 14-2... so that's 24-8 in 32 games and at worst 19-8 after 27 games. Although I recall them losing to Tampa, post Thanksgiving in 2001, which would likely make him 20-7. So I would assume he should be on that list. Right?

Yup, 19-8, same as Shula.

The list was comparing McVay to legends...not whatever Martz is ;)

Early records for coaches are dependent on the state of the team when that coach took over. A bad record slow start can lead to higher draft picks which can turn things around as with a couple of really good drafts. We all the Jimmy Johnson story with a big trade that helped build the team. His knowledge of the college talent also help him to win later on. It's great that McVay turned things around for the Rams right from the start.

McVay was left with a lot of talent from all those early round draft picks the losing Rams had. While I hate bringing up Jeff Fisher, he and Les Snead had set the foundation that McVay built upon. McVay and Snead added a few players and deleted a few in the first year as a catalyst for a fast turnaround. Lots of credit to McVay for turning the Rams losing culture to a winning culture seemly overnight.

On the radio this week they talked about how the Whiners and Kyle Shanahan will benefit for losing Jimmy G. by having an early draft picks each round and a healthy Jimmy G. Currently, they have the first pick in the draft. So Shanahan's slow start could unfortunately, turnaround quickly. Hope they win a game or two more this year. Then hope they miss on draft picks.

All Rams nation is grateful to McVay and Snead for a fast start to his career as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. Hope he keeps winning for many years to come.
