If Petty can't make plays outside of the pocket and extend plays, as they say about him, he'll never make it in the NFL.

Not seeing the comparison to Davis tbh. I do like Mayock just don't agree with him on that.

Petty's still my target at QB in this draft. Good touch on intermediate and deep passes and all the physical tools you want. Just needs to develop through a couple camps and get coached up. There's a reasonable chance those two QBs at the top of the draft aren't the best from this draft when we look back 5 years from now, so all I care about is they take a flyer on one of them.

S'funny, I was thinking that Garrett Grayson reminded me of Austin Davis, right down to the horns on his helmet. At 230 lbs, Petty is much more of a bruiser when he scrambles.

Wow Junk, that actually...to me...looked almost EXACTLY like Sammy. Very similar drop and throwing motion, but Grayson looks a tad faster and more sturdy in his legs. This guy is intriguing.....

I dont see that comparison at all. Petty is bigger and a much stronger arm, he will also surprise a lot of people with his athleticism in the combine. Remember who told you first haha. Petty has all of the tools you want in an nfl qb he just didn't play in an nfl style offense so will take him time to adjust and work on his footwork. He is still the guy I want in the draft.

My favorite website for these guys is Draft Breakdown. I love their full condensed games highlights. I don't see us trading up to get Winston or Mariotta, which means (in my mind) that we'll be taking a hard long look at Brett Hundley, Garrett Grayson and Bryce Petty (esp now that Dak Prescott is returning for his senior year).

~~~
http://draftbreakdown.com/players/brett-hundley/ - yeah, ok. He looks like he should have "it" and then some, but that also he could be one of those guys (like Bradford) that fans love to hate. I'd still take him in the 2nd, what do fans know.
http://draftbreakdown.com/players/bryce-petty/- quick release, strong arm and accurate. Fast and bruising enough to run read option, and bounce off defenders. Can scramble if nobody open. Even the "bad game" at W.Virginia wasn't that bad. I can see him climbing the draft charts. I'd take him in the 2nd (if desperate) or 3rd.
http://draftbreakdown.com/players/garrett-grayson/ - from what I see, he's accurate if he has a pocket. But I don't like his lack of mobility if his protection breaks down. His throwing motion looks a bit long to me. I'd take him in the 3rd (if desperate) or 4th.
Prescott sucks wind anyway, so thank goodness he decided to stay. None of those other QBs really excite, but Hundley, imo, has the greatest ceiling of all of them if he can still be taught some fundamentals of QBing (i.e. scanning the field more quickly).
Blowing a 2nd or 3rd on Petty or Grayson doesn't excite me. At all.
I am also leaning toward Petty right now. If he actually is a lot like Austin Davis then I think he is a better version of him, not a lesser one.
Accuracy and decision making are important. I have seen good leadership from Petty and the ability to extend plays in college, albeit in a spread attack.
There are NO options out there that EXCITE me. But we gotta make a move and hope for the best.
  1. Sign Bradford for a reduced contract
  2. Pick up some veteran QB in a trade or free agency
  3. Draft somebody when we get a chance
Let 'em battle it out.
Bryce Petty is Drew Stanton...I'm not spending a Day 2 pick on the guy. He'll get overdrafted and I hope we aren't the team that makes that mistake.
Yeah I agree he will be overdrafted. Gonna be quite a few of those this year too IMO.
But here's the thing... If the Rams do their diligence on him and decide he has the upside they are looking for and reach a little for him, I'm ok with it. I mean we could argue that 1 or 2 overall is reaching for Mariota, since he's gonna have the same adjustment issues we see with Petty. In Mariota's case, I think he clearly has a better arm and can throw extremely well on the run, plus he's very athletic, but none of that means he'll be a better QB than Petty. It's all a crap shoot man so like I said just take a shot on one of these guys and hopefully don't reach too badly.
I'd rather we not. You're passing on a potential starter by reaching on Petty.
If I'm going to draft a guy highly, I gotta believe he's a future starter. And the only two guys in this class I feel confident in are Winston and Mariota.
LMAO Austin ' pick 6 ' Davis Huh? I could say watching tape on Petty I could see that. I'd rather have Hundley in the 2nd.
I heard yesterday on 101espn Randy Karraker saying that he had talked to an unnamed rams executive about Hundley and that exec said they kinda liked Hundley but that there was just something missing. I totally agree, Hundley has all the physical skills to be a great qb but there is just something missing, he doesnt have that it factor. I agree that Petty isnt perfect but he has all the intangibles to go with underrated athleticism. He is one of those guys that can will his team to victory, a great leader, very smart, he just needs time to adjust to an nfl style offense.
There's a lot of things missing. The "it factor" tends to be a buzzword. But Petty is missing many of the same things that Hundley is missing.
You can say that Petty is missing the reading defenses or making multiple reads but I think that is a product of the offense he ran rather than his fault. Hundley ran a nfl style offense that requires reading defenses and making multiple reads and just isnt good at it. Ill take Petty every time over Hundley and I think Petty will prove to be the better nfl qb.
