Ran Carthon will be named the St. Louis Rams' pro director of personnel, a source with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday.

Carthon, son of former Giants running back Maurice Carthon, had worked as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons.

Carthon reunites with current Rams general manager Les Snead, who recently was hired from Atlanta, where he had served as director of player personnel. Carthon was a scout with the Falcons.

The Falcons' front office has seen some shakeups since Snead's departure, including the internal promotions of Dave Caldwell to the position of director of player personnel and DeJuan Polk to the position of director of pro scouting. Former Indianapolis Colts executive Chris Polian joined the Falcons' personnel department last month.

Maurice Carthon played for the Giants from 1985 to 1991, and spent the 1992 season with the Colts.

It looks like Carthon fills a vacant spot.

A list of the front office personnel people before this hire:

Football Operations

Mike Williams Vice President/Player Personnel
Lawrence McCutcheon Director/Player Personnel
John Mancini Director/College Scouting

Williams used to occupy the position Carthon was just hired for.

Rams hire Williams as pro personnel director
By Jim Thomas

The Rams haven’t had a director of pro scouting since Mike Ackerley in 2000. But they have one now. Mike Williams has been hired as the team’s new director of pro personnel. Williams comes to the Rams from the San Francisco 49ers, where he has been assistant director of pro personnel since 2005.

Mike Williams has been promoted to vice president of player personnel. He had been serving as director of pro personnel. John Mancini has been named director of college scouting. He was a college scout for the Rams the past 10 years.

What it LOOKS LIKE (as of right now, without additional info) is that Williams was hired as pro personnel director in 2009, promoted to VP of all personnel in 2010, and when he was promoted they did not name a new pro personnel director. And they just now have named a guy for that spot: Carthon.

SO FAR the major people remain: Williams, McCutcheon, even Mancini. Carthon looks like an add-on, not a replacement.

Well, that';s wrong. Or it is in this respect--Mike Williams IS gone, along with 2 others.

So far, no bloodbath.

Rams revamping scouting department

BY JIM THOMAS

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

Atlanta Falcons scouts Taylor Morton and Ran Carthon are coming to St. Louis as general manager Les Snead revamps the Rams' scouting/personnel department.

Team sources confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Morton will become the Rams' college scouting director and Carthon will head the pro personnel department.

The Rams will not announce the hirings until some paperwork is completed.

Most scouting department contracts expire after the draft, and three members of the scouting department will not be retained. Vice president of player personnel Mike Williams — a Billy Devaney hire who came to the Rams as pro personnel director — will not be back.

In addition, scouts Russ Bolinger and Brandon Schwab will not be back.

John Mancini, who had been the team's director of college scouting, returns as assistant director of college scouting.
