Hoyer: I don’t even think about getting benched for Manziel

Rookie quarterback Derek Carr is the starter in Oakland. Rookie quarterback Blake Bortles is the starter in Jacksonville. Rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is the starter in Minnesota. And now rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger is the starter in Tennessee. But rookie quarterbackJohnny Manziel is firmly planted on the bench in Cleveland.

The man keeping Manziel on the bench, Brian Hoyer, says he’s not worried about that changing. Hoyer said he’s confident in what he’s doing for the Browns, even after Sunday’s ugly loss to the Jaguars, and he believes the coaches are committed to him.

“I don’t even think about it to be honest with you,” Hoyer said, via ESPNCleveland.com. “I know what goes into my preparation. I know that talking to my coaches, that’s the farthest thing on my mind. Yeah, I don’t doubt that [coach Mike Pettine] has my back. I also know that if you have one bad game, I think thatpeople are just going to be calling for your job already. That’s just the way it goes. But I know within this building I feel more than comfortable.”

Hoyer did have one bad game, and people are calling for his job, and Hoyer isn’t happy about that.

“Three weeks ago everyone was saying Tom Brady was done with,” Hoyer said. “He’s the greatest quarterback of all time. He had one bad game, and people are throwing him under the bus. I think when you see that even the great ones have bad games you know you’re going to have a few. Yeah, it sucks. You don’t want to go out there and not perform well. Obviously, we prepare our butts off all week to go out there and execute and play the best of our ability, but sometimes you have a situation where you don’t play great, and the other team plays well. It’s a bad combination. For me, really of all the games I’ve ever played, that was the worst I’ve ever felt after one.”

Hoyer will feel even worse if he has another game as bad as Sunday’s. If he plays like that again this week and the Browns lose to the Raiders, Hoyer will surely lose his job to Manziel.

I thought Davis looked better than Manziel in our preseason game against the Browns, fwiw.

If Manziel were on this team, the Rams may have won an extra game, but it wouldn't be that much of a difference. The thing everyone loves about Manziel is his swagger and his moxie, and so far Davis has show his fair share of that.

What you would have, however, is an excited fan base. Had Manziel led the team to victory against the Seahawks, the Rams would be positioned much differently in the national media. Instead of being "flukey" or "lucky" or "tricky", that Rams would have won because Johnny Manziel put his young team on his shoulders and beat the Superbowl Champions.

Narratives go a long, long way in the eyes of the general public.

Why, Johnny freakin football of course.

He's got all of this moxie and the mojo and this moojuice. His farts smell like roses and he can win games all by himself with a stare before he even steps on the field. (So say the Jaguars)

Heck, the only reason that the Browns haven't played him yet is because of their secret project code named "swagger" which involves genetic cloning of Johnny Manziel's EGO to be supplanted into the minds of every player.

So, just forget about it Rams fans, this was no wasted pick to be discarded in a few years as a total loss of time and money. Fur coats can and will win football games.

Now if only we could train Austin Davis to be an equally self entitled jackass, the league would be crushed by Ram epic sauce.

Austin Davis is the Rams starting QB and I don't think we'd see much better production from anyone else. This team, up till Sunday, has been finding ways to lose. It's a good team and they are going to win a lot of games. I'd take Davis all day every day over Manziel.

I have an algebra equation to share. Johnny Manziel < X where X = any quarterback on any roster or practice squad in the National Football League. This is known as the DCH index and may be highly subjective.

I'm not sure the Rams would have any wins with Manziel starting. Not sure if the OP was trying to frame Manziel starting as a good thing or bad thing. I'd consider it the latter...this year, at least.

Thank god we didn't take Manziel. We'd have a worse starting QB than Austin Davis plus we would be without one of our two first round picks, likely Aaron Donald.

I am extremely happy with AD at QB right now for the Rams. And I get that a lot of fans just don't like JM, it's a very "in" thing to bash the guy, even a lot of the Browns fans get in on that the way Hoyer is playing.

But I don't understand it. He's a kid who had enormous success right away and didn't handle it perfectly. He may flop in the NFL, and since he's a Brown I could care less, but writing him off already is just silly.

When he was with A&M any time I see their game on the TV that channel doesn't change. Just being honest, and I have never liked anything about A&M. Really fun player to watch, IMO. I suppose that with all the failure I had when I was a kid, the drugs and stupid things I did, that I'm just not judgmental in that way. I don't know. But it still wouldn't surprise me to see him succeed in the NFL. It's not smart to bet against guys like him in my estimation, and I wouldn't want to anyway.

Davis is similar to him in some ways. Dude has a burning desire to win, and I love that, personally. Those types of guys tend to rise to the top no matter what others think.

Hoyer isn't a bad QB. Don't know why everyone's in such a rush to replace him when the problems with the Browns seem to me to be a lack of overall talent. There doesn't seem to be a single soul on that team that would scare a coordinator into special game planning beyond normal preparation.

that reminds me, I have a bet in on under 8.5 games that Manzeil will start this season, and took the over 6.5 games that Davis would start...getting close to collecting on both of those !!!

Just curious...is there anyone that actually does want Manziel over Davis?

If so, I would like to hear your side and explanation out of curiosity, especially if the explanation doesn't have to do with his personality.

How would having Johnny FB sitting on our bench make us a better team? I doubt that he would ever be able to learn Shotty's offense.

I think he's a complete distraction. The media makes it all about him and not about the team. Let's see how this guy plays out in a couple of years.
