Rams Can Expose the Seahawks on Both Sides of the Ball
Andy Benoit

The Rams are positioned to become the NFL’s most talked-about team on Monday. A win over the more-established Seahawks would make them 4–1 and put them in command of the NFC West. No offense has looked better-schemed than first-year head coach Sean McVay’s.

And remember, last year Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur was QBs coach for a Falcons offense that thoroughly exploited the hidden weaknesses of Seattle’s foundational Cover 3 zone.

Seattle defensive coordinator Kris Richard is gradually turning the Seahawks into more of a man-to-man unit. The Rams would welcome Richard’s man coverages; McVay has installed a lot of the man-beating pick and rub routes, similar to those that New England runs so well.

The Seattle matchup also favors Los Angeles on the defensive side of the ball, for the simple reason that every play will start with Seattle’s offensive line trying to block Aaron Donald, Robert Quinn and mechanically savvy strongman Michael Brockers.

Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips should press the Seahawks receivers (Phillips can keep two safeties back to minimize the risk). If Russell Wilson consistently has to hold the ball, Los Angeles will win.

We have a completely different team now though tbh. The matchup of a physical, defense-first Rams team that was geeked through the roof to play their "Super Bowl" vs Seattle is gone now. It's replaced by a smart and explosive offense and a defense that has been struggling. Absolutely different team in horns.

I'm throwing out that little streak we had going for that reason. This game pivots on two things IMO:

1. Jared being smart with the ball and not forcing things.
2. Defense containing Wilson in the pocket.

If they do the above the Rams will win this game.

I had totally not thought about this angle ... wow. And we have the weapons to exploit it.

Very interesting tidbit here.

So, they show a graphic through 1/4 of the season that Seattle has dropped to a 10th ranked defense, including 27th against the run; and Heath Bar says he, "expects the defense of the last 4 years to show up Sunday". Can someone ask him why they'll suddenly show up after taking the last 4 weeks off? Real intelligent commentary we got here...

Is it just me or did Heath Evans look incredibly constipated during that entire segment? I mean we all know the guy is figuratively full of shit whenever he opens his mouth, but I think he might also be literally full of shit there.

His suit and shirt may be 2 sizes too small. That might have something to do with it.

So the Hawks have only won at home, and only against SF and Indy, right?

Away and against decent teams they're 0-2, so let's hope for that to hold true.

He is invested in the Rams sucking, and the fact that they don't is making him ill. He "...is not ready for a world where the Rams are good."

Rams have 2 ongoing injury concerns going into Sunday Afternoon:

Right OG Jamon Brown (Groin) was limited in practice Friday & is considered questionable
High Safety Joyner, Lamarcus - ( Hamstring) Did Not Practice all week & is listed as doubtful.

The girthy 6-4 330 lbs easy going Jamon Brown had his best professional game in Dallas last Sunday & appears to finally sitting into the RG post after 3 OTA's, 3 Training Camps, 3 pre seasons & playing in 24 NFL games. Kromer must be :D @ this time on how far JB has come in less than one month. It takes much longer on these OL'ers to get NFL ready than most all other positions. Are you happy ? You know I am . JB will face 2nd yr 2nd rd selection Jarran Reed from Bama. The Seahawks Reed has been playing very well. Should be a good test along with the stunts & twist from DE Michael Bennett. I would expect JB to start. I am not sure who would replace JB if he was unable to??

LJ missed most of 9er game & all of the Dallas game. LJ was replaced with the 28 yr old Cody Davis.Cody has played in 62 NFL games in 5 seasons. Most of his action as a key special teams contributor. CD has only 4 starts though. CD is best @ playing high safety & is not known as a hitter but a super fast sideline rangy DB. CD is not utilized like LJ is in the Nickle. Last Sunday CD maintains his high safety post in the Nickle & Rookie safety John Johnson & CB NRC took turns in the Nickle & Dime defenses. JJ III had a big game against the Cowboys. I would expect to see much more of JJ III as this season moves on.

NFL Week 5 Preview: Seahawks at Rams
BY PFF ANALYSIS TEAM

SEA-Seahawks-Header.png

Coverage by: Mike Cahill

MATCHUP: SEATTLE SEAHAWKS OFFENSE VS. LOS ANGELES RAMS DEFENSE

QB Russell Wilson vs. Rams Pass Coverage – Over his last four games against the Rams, quarterback Russell Wilson has a passer rating of 87.7 with six touchdowns, three interceptions, and has been sacked 13 times. Wilson was targeting the deep ball a lot in Week 4, with eight attempts and five completions on passes of 20 or more yards for 165 yards, the most by 32 yards in Week 4.

His Week 5 matchup will be a test as the Rams have only allowed five passes of 20 or more yards to be completed on 11 attempts, with Kirk Cousins not even attempting one in Week 2 against them. Wilson’s 16.3 20-plus yard pass attempt percentage is fourth highest in the NFL and his 10 completions are third.

T Rees Odhiambo vs. Edge Robert Quinn – Odhiambo is currently the 68th graded tackle with a 27.3 overall grade and will face a Robert Quinn that hasn’t been the same since his 2013 season where he broke out. Currently, he is now the 98th ranked edge defender out of 103 at and overall grade of 44.3.

Odhiambo had his best game of the season in Week 4 after allowing only two quarterback pressures, two less than his previous best of four. His 95.5 pass-blocking efficiency on 33 pass-blocking snaps ranked 26th among 57 tackles and now he’ll be seeing an edge defender that has four quarterback pressures all season and two in the last two weeks.

WR Paul Richardson vs. CB Trumaine Johnson – Quarterback Russell Wilson has a passer rating of 106.8 when targeting Paul Richardson, which is 26th highest among receivers. He will see the Rams’ No. 1 corner in Trumaine Johnson on the outside.

Johnson has the 51st overall coverage grade at 70.2 and has allowed a passer rating of 69.4 into his coverage. Things will get interesting, as two of Richardson’s highest passer ratings have come on crossing routes and out routes, while Johnson has given up a passer rating of 112.5 and 118.8 to those routes, respectively.

MATCHUP: LOS ANGELES RAMS OFFENSE VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS DEFENSE

QB Jared Goff vs. Seahawks Coverage – Quarterback Jared Goff’s best game in 2016 came against the Seahawks in Week 15 with a 68.0 overall grade and a passer rating of 67.9. Goff comes into the Week 5 matchup with an overall passer rating of 112.2, and has not had a week with a passer rating below 85.2, but now he’s going up against a secondary that has allowed a passer rating of 75.1 on 90 targets through four games and has only allowed two passing touchdowns.

The Seahawks had Goff under pressure for 41.4 percent of his drop backs last year and now blitz above the league average so far in 2017. However, Goff’s passer rating when blitzed is well above the league average (113.3 vs. 91.4 NFL average), so the Seahawks might not be able to rely on the same game plan against Goff this time around.

LAR5-768x432.png

HB Todd Gurley vs. Seahawks Run Defense – Todd Gurley will look to get more production in the running game as he has been doing most of his damage in the passing game, as evidenced by his 47.7 run grade versus his 91.1 receiving grade, which is first overall among running backs. Gurley is currently averaging 2.31 yards after contact per attempt and will see a Seahawks defense that has allowed 5.0 yards per carry and 43.5 percent of running yards after contact.

WR Cooper Kupp vs. CB Justin Coleman – Cooper Kupp has seen just over half of his targets from the slot and has excelled when doing so. He is currently averaging 2.28 yards per route run on 54 routes run out of the slot, sixth in the league and is one of only six receivers to average more than 2.00 yards per route run.

He will see Seattle’s slot cornerback Justin Coleman a lot on Sunday’s matchup, who has seen more targets than anyone on the Seahawks defense with 10. Of the 46 snaps in coverage from the slot, Coleman is averaging 1.24 yards allowed per cover snap, which is tied for 24th most among 53 eligible cornerbacks. Kupp has yet to score a touchdown from the slot while Coleman has recorded an interception while in slot coverage.

Looks like PFF has been paying attention to the Rams once great edge rusher. Those are some really depressing stats for a veteran pass rusher.:(

I don't think they want Goff trying to convert 3rd and long against that rush so running the ball is a good way to control the game. Seattle's offense has been pretty pedestrian as they seem content to wait for you to make a mistake

Yet another example of how terrible and stupid PFF's grades are. IIRC, they have Gurley ranked as the 100th best runner according to his "run grade" this year.

"That rush" has been garbage this year. They're ranked 20th through four games in sacks, just not the same group tbh. Now we can say they had a slow start or whatever, but the Rams have been pretty good in pressures and sacks allowed and Goff's moving well in the pocket so this is a tough game for Seattle to "get right" in.

The historical stats I've seen trumped out there of late need to be disregarded. The Rams are a different team. The Shehawks still have an elite secondary, but their rush has not looked good.

Goff on third and long I agree is a concern, however for different reasons. I have enormous respect for that secondary and even if Jared's got time it's going to be dangerous as a matchup.
