Kurt Warner getting 'serious consideration' for 'Monday Night Football' job

There’s at least one Super Bowl-winning quarterback left in the running for the Monday Night Football analyst gig.

Kurt Warner has had multiple conversations with ESPN, and the Hall of Fame inductee remains among the narrowing list of candidates to replace Jon Gruden, a person with knowledge of the discussions told USA TODAY Sports. The person, granted anonymity because sensitive nature of talks, also said Warner is getting "serious consideration" for the job.

ESPN had already sought out Peyton Manning and Brett Favre as potential replacements for Gruden, who had called Monday night games for the previous nine seasons and left ESPN to take over as head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Manning passed on the job and Favre, who per a New York Post report had a less-than-spectacular audition, said on Twitter this week that he was unsure he wanted to pursue broadcasting.

Steve Young, who serves as an analyst on the MNF pregame show, said earlier this year that he’s not interested, citing the time commitment required.

Warner has been an analyst on NFL Network since 2010. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, leading the Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last summer.

ESPN doesn’t appear to be in any rush to name a Gruden replacement or the one left open in the booth when it was announced play-by-play announcer Sean McDonough would go back to calling college games.

Another person familiar with the discussions told USA TODAY Sports that the list of candidates remains “long” and that it’s “too early to conclude” who the finalists are at this point.

Former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan and former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck are among the others ESPN has considered.

I would definitely enjoy this. He made radio broadcasts fun for me when I had to work late.

Kurt partnering up with ESPN? Should mix like oil & vinegar. I would really enjoy ESPN if this were to happen.

Kurt would be the best thing for ESPN (the slow dying dung heap network)......on the flip side ESPN would be the worse thing for Kurt's future resume. Hey Kurt ask for an unreasonable paycheck & they will still pay you.

Yup. I'd hate to see him jump ship from NFL Network.

Thank God it won't be Steve Young. Fuck him.

I can see how Favre would probably bomb in an audition for this... he would also bomb while on air if given a mic. That could be extremely entertaining though... just imagine some of the crazy shit that he would probably say before he realized he shouldn't have.

Kurt would be an excellent choice.

I'm just thankful that I no longer have to hear Jon, the pirate face maker, on Monday nights.

He does several/most/all radio telecasts for MNF...I think Boomer does TNF....either would be fine with me.

I didn't care much for Sean McDonough. Pat Summerall was/still is my favorite play-by-play guy. I'm liking Romo a lot too!

I love Romo doing play by play, or color commentary, or whatever his job is. Dude is insightful (to me anyway) and says awkward crap in the couple of games a watched that he did.

Romo is funny too. One game he had my son and I laughing hard 3 or 4 times. I can't remember which game.

I absolutely love Kurt’s podcasts as he breaks down QB play across the NFL. With that said, Romo is the best analyst during games I have ever heard. Madden may have been the most entertaining, but Romo includes advanced insight that only true lovers of the game can really appreciate.

Warner would be excellent and the perfect choice with his story and the way he breaks down a game. Granted IMO, he'll have his guard up, not to come off totally one sided and sometimes that leads to being more critical of your former team, however, IMO, Kurt will find the proper balance and would even become more beloved then he already is.

I like Kurt, but not as an announcer/Color Man! and the rest of the list so far seem pretty Boring! JMHO
