A prolonged Buccaneers drive on the opening series of Saturday night’s Buccaneers-Jaguars preseason game ended with Bucs rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo missing a 32-yard field goal.

Aguayo is being watched a little more closely than most rookies because Bucs general manager Jason Licht drafted Aguayo in the second round. Aguayo never missed a field goal from inside 40 yards in his college career, but in two preseason games has now missed a PAT and a 32-yarder.

It’s early. Last week, Aguayo attributed his missed PAT to nerves associated with kicking in his first NFL game.

He now has three weeks to get over his stage fright.

This guy wasn't even an elite kicker prospect imo, still can't believe he went in the second round.

This is the NFL, baby. Roberto has to get used to the increased game speed like everyone else.

I'm pretty ignorant on the intricacies of kicking. Does NFL still do the K ball thing? Is the college ball smaller? Obviously there are differences in the uprights but the hash angles are better... Dunno if it's quite the same as going from an aluminum bat to wood, but I think there are differences... So thinking a guy will be the same in the NFL as he was in college is pretty silly.

I would think an NFL team would want to draft a kicker based on leg strength and potential to improve his accuracy, not based on college results. Dan Bailey went undrafted -- maybe he's a fluke, but I would think NFL teams would try to uncover the signs they missed with him and find the next lesser college guy that could morph into best in NFL history, not just take the best college guy and assume he will be the best in the NFL, doesn't seem to work that way.

Lol, what increased game speed? It's the exact same thing he did in college.

His new opponents are faster, quicker, stronger, and smarter than his old collegiate adversaries. He may have to adapt a faster rhythm to avoid undue pressure before his kicks.

Kicking is kicking. It's the one position in the game that is easily the least effected by the other moving parts on the field.

I'll trade Mason, Pead, Quick and Joyner for him straight up
Most Rams fans would trade Mason, Pead, and Quick for nothing so... And Joyner has a chance to be a contributor which would be more than you can say for a guy who'd be a second string kicker on this team LOL

I think Aguayo will be a top tier kicker eventually. He has let the nerves get to him early but give him time. The guy was automatic in college and the Bucs obviously saw his potential.

Aguayo goes 6 for 6

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/08/26/roberto-aguayo-makes-all-his-kicks-on-friday-night/

A trying week for Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo ended on a positive note.

Aguayo made all six kicks he tried on Friday night as the Buccaneers turned in a strong showing on both sides of the ball while beating the Browns 30-13 in Tampa. Aguayo made field goals from 48, 21 and 27 yards and made all three of his extra point attempts.

That’s a sharp change from the first two weeks of preseason. Aguayo missed two field goals and an extra point, leading to much scrutiny of a player who the Buccaneers traded up to select in the second round of this year’s draft. Aguayo followed that up with more misses in Tuesday’s practice, which led to hooting and heckling from a home crowd and responses from other members of the NFL’s kicking fraternity.

All that will likely return when and if Aguayo misses a few kicks during the regular season, but, for now, a player who made 88.5 percent of his field goals and all of his extra points in college has put himself back on track.

That’s a good thing for the Bucs on a night full of them. Jameis Winston threw for 259 yards in the first half, Mike Evans had 115 receiving yards on five catches and the defense recorded nine sacks to go with Aguayo’s successful evening.
