Joyner's injury leaves Rams thin at cornerback

GLENDALE, Ariz. • The Rams entered Sunday’s game against Arizona with only four healthy cornerbacks — and two of those four should’ve been categorized as kind of healthy.

They finished the game with just three cornerbacks — not the best formula for coping with an Arizona offense that features lots of three- and even four-wide receiver sets.

Trumaine Johnson, who returned last week in a reserve role after being sidelined since Aug. 23 with a knee injury, made his first regular-season start. Janoris Jenkins, who missed the past two games with a knee injury, came off the bench but ended up seeing plenty of playing time in a 31-14 loss to the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Rookie E.J. Gaines started opposite Johnson at cornerback, and according to unofficial press box stats the Missouri product had three pass breakups and a tackle for loss.

But things got dicey when nickel back Lamarcus Joyner, the rookie from Florida State, went out with a groin injury early in the game. Joyner did not return.

After playing three safeties and just two cornerbacks in the nickel following Joyner’s departure, the Rams finally went with Gaines at nickel back and Johnson and Jenkins at corner in the second half.

It marked the first time Johnson and Jenkins, the team’s normal starting cornerbacks, had been on the field together in regular-season play since the 2013 season.

DEFENSIVE DEBUT

Recently acquired safety Mark Barron played special teams last week against San Francisco, but Sunday marked his first plays on defense for the Rams.

“We played a little bit more than we anticipated with Mark,” coach Jeff Fisher said. “Now Mark’s packages will continue to increase. You can see what he does. He’s a good football player, and he will make some big plays for us.”

Barron had a couple of jarring hits in the game. He had the sack that knocked Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer out of the game early in the fourth quarter. Used frequently on the blitz, Barron also had two quarterback hits.

“I knew I would be playing some, I wasn’t sure how much,” Barron said. “Yeah, I got a little bit more (playing time) than I thought I would.”

Barron also was strong in run support, finishing with five tackles and two tackles for loss.

“You put me out there, I’m gonna go out there and play ball,” he said. “I’ve just gotta get more acclimated with the system. Hopefully things will keep progressing.”

PALMER INJURED

Arizona coach Bruce Arians said he didn’t know the severity of Palmer’s left knee injury, but the Cardinals fear he has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, which would obviously end Palmer’s season. The veteran quarterback was playing some of the best football of his career and signed a three-year, $50 million contract extension on Friday.

“He will be evaluated, and get an MRI and everything,” Arians said.

ROBERSON SCRATCHED

One reason the Rams were thin at cornerback Sunday was an ankle injury suffered last week against San Francisco by undrafted rookie Marcus Roberson.

After not practicing all week, he was on the Rams’ pregame inactive list. Others Rams inactives were: S Maurice Alexander, RB Trey Watts, LB Daren Bates (groin), OG Brandon Washington, TE Alex Bayer and DE Ethan Westbrooks.

RAM-BLINGS

• Robert Quinn had the first of the Rams’ three sacks Sunday, giving him seven for the season and at least one sack in four consecutive games.

• Arizona managed only 28 yards rushing on 22 carries, or just 1.3 yards per carry.

• Alec Ogletree’s third-quarter interception was his first of the season. He returned it 44 yards, but the Rams got no points out of the takeaway.

• Jared Cook’s 59-yard TD catch was the Rams’ longest pass play of the season.

I appear to have been grossly wrong in my assessment of Gaines value to the team. To be fair to myself, I never questioned his pass defense abilities, only his tackling, match up problems against bigger guys and ability to remain injury free considering his size. He seems to have cleaned up his tackling technique with some good coaching and probably strong personal commitment. I'm certainly happy to be mistaken about that because we sure need him out on the field. (y)

I still see him struggling against some of the taller and bigger players though. Of course bigger guys struggle against them too but unlike players with diminutive stature size, bigger guys can overcome that with improved technique. I don't see him growing any bigger though. But that's nit picking so...great pick by the Snish!

I was favorably impressed with our tackling as a whole yesterday

The first time all season with no reason to complain. Will it continue though? :cautious:

I am very impressed with EJ Gaines as a 6th round rookie. One of the best third day draft selection finds by Fisher in a long long time. Once Jenkins & Johnson get healthy & Gaines moves into the slot/Nickle on a regular basis things should even get better for Gaines. Not sure what Gregg Williams is going with the heavy safeties combinations but having the fast big hitting Barron on the field yesterday was a serious improvement IMO. When Joyner get backs to full health you may see where they used him deep where he can see everything in front of him & he just may be that free/deep safety you have been longing for for so long. This secondary could get real good real fast!

Jenkins looked like a future All Pro as a rookie also. But since we're the Rams, I'm sure Gaines will regress and totally suck by next year, like every other freaking player to wear the horns.

BonifayRam hoping Fisher sees the light:

Fisher seems to be very resistant to the idea of Joyner playing FS (or that role under a different name) so while I wholeheartedly agree with what you said, I have my doubts it will happen. :(

On a side note, we could have had any of these players in the 4th round instead of Mo. I'd call it hindsight except I would have drafted an O-line player instead of a SS we didn't need.

Bodine, RussellC
The Bengals have named rookie Russell Bodine their starting center.
The fourth-round pick out of UNC beat out Mike Pollak, who will now fit in as Cincy's top interior reserve. From left to right, the Bengals' starting OL reads LT Andrew Whitworth, LG Clint Boling, C Bodine, RG Kevin Zeitler, RT Andre Smith. Pro Football Focus has had Bodine struggling in the preseason, although the coaching staff clearly sees him as a high-ceiling option.

This is pretty meaningless but I didn't think that at all and in fact I started a thread (shortly after his first year) where I expressed my concerns about his play. I have no such concerns about Gaines play except for the obvious, his size. If he can stay healthy I have a good feeling about him.

I doubt that Joyner ever plays Safety, in his first 3-4 years....He is just too small...He seems to have difficulty staying injury free in the slot, which is a very physical area of the defense as well...

Why not play Barron & McDonald there, as SAFETIES?!?!...Interchangeable pieces, for the next 10 years...with Mo Alexander as the primary backup to both...Barron was a beast on blitzes, TJ played his best game as a Ram yesterday...

Joyner really needs to focus on defending wr's...I think he allows 72% completions when his man is targeted, and he constantly misses sacks when blitzed, even when given clear shots....I for one, will be happy with Tru-JJ-EJ as the primary corners, with Roberson as the main backup.

Yep he has had his issues with covering the slot but then we also see many teams best WR's playing the slot too. I believe in Joyner's latent outstanding football skills. I still think the Rams have three bone fide hitting machines with Barron, McDonald & Joyner on the field at the same time. Just wait! It takes time.

Really man? When you think of posting something like this, you should just hold down the backspace key and move on.
