After a costly fumble last week in Cleveland, running back Isaiah Pead got a long look by the Rams on Saturday night against Green Bay.

Pead started in place of Daryl Richardson but found the going extremely tough after a game-opening run of 11 yards around right end. With the exception of a play here and there, Pead played into the third quarter, but he had only 21 yards to show for 11 carries.

He didn’t have much running room on a lot of those plays. His best work came on his only reception of the day, when he eluded one Green Bay tackler and then tight-roped his way along the sideline for a 10-yard gain and a first down midway through the second quarter.

The running back competition did not include Zac Stacy. The rookie from Vanderbilt, a fifth-round draft pick, was among the pre-game scratches announced by the Rams.

Stacy played last week against Cleveland but has practiced only sporadically for the past week and half. Team and league sources have described Stacy as having “general soreness,” but he has had his right leg wrapped at some practices.

Once Pead left early in the third quarter, the next in line at running back was another rookie, undrafted Benny Cunningham of Middle Tennessee State.

Richardson, the clear-cut favorite as the starter, had only cameo work at the Edward Jones Dome. He had an 8-yard gain wiped out by a holding penalty against Tavon Austin in the second quarter. And on the Rams’ first series, he took a short pass from quarterback Sam Bradford and raced down the right sideline for a 24-yard gain.

SITTING IT OUT

Other announced scratches by the Rams: S Matt Giordano (calf), LB Jabara Williams (hamstring), DE/LB Sammy Brown (calf), OT Sean Hooey (ankle), OT Rodger Saffold (shoulder), and DE Eugene Sims (family matter). In addition, TE Lance Kendricks (knee) and DT Jermelle Cudjo did not play.

Among the 15 scratches for Green Bay were WRs Jordy Nelson (knee) and Randall Cobb (biceps).

FIELD GOALS ONLY

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 10 of 12 passes for 134 yards with a passer rating of 113.2, but the Rams kept him and backup Graham Harrell out of the end zone in the first half.

“I’m disappointed in our tackling, we didn’t play our best on defense,” linebacker James Laurinaitis said. “But I’m proud that I guess looking back, we held a dang good quarterback to six points (on two field goals). I think that’s a positive but we definitely have to get better at tackling because we had some plays that should be four-yard gains end up 11, 12 (yards) – stuff like that.”

CONNECTIONS

The player known as “Big Grease” – defensive tackle Ryan Pickett – is still going strong for Green Bay. Pickett was a first-round draft pick by the Rams in 2001 and spent his first five seasons in St. Louis.

Packers outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene, who played his high school ball in Granite City, was a star pass rusher for the Los Angeles Rams from 1985-92.

RAM-BLINGS

Saturday’s game marked the first preseason contest against the Packers since the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995. The last time the teams met in exhibition play was 1994 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

• Undrafted rookie Ray Ray Armstrong was fined $7,875 by the NFL for a facemask penalty in last week’s preseason game against Cleveland.

• Rocky McIntosh, who started at strongside linebacker with the Rams last season, has signed with Detroit.
