After months of speculation, the Jim Harbaugh era in San Francisco is over.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday soon after San Francisco's season-ending 20-17 win that Harbaugh and the 49ers are parting ways, according to a source involved in the situation.

Harbaugh was given the game ball and a Gatorade bath at the end of his team's victory over Arizona on Sunday. It felt like a celebration, but the 49ers knew it was the end.

"I had the time of my life. It's like that song," Harbaugh said with a smile after the game. "I had the time of my life; I really did."

The Niners missed the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons before Harbaugh took the reins in 2011. He instantly turned San Francisco into a perennial contender, leading the team to three straight postseason berths, including a Super Bowl appearance and two trips to the NFC Championship Game. However, his final season roaming the 49ers' sideline was a disappointment: The team trudged its way to an 8-8 record.

Harbaugh didn't try to hide the fact he was leaving in his postgame press conference, even before it was announced. Harbaugh was asked about possibly joining the University of Michigan as their next head coach.

"There will be announcements made concerning those things," Harbaugh said.

Rapoport said on NFL Gameday Highlights that Harbaugh is "almost certain" to wind up as Michigan's coach, with a salary ballooning north of $8 million. Harbaugh finishes with a 49-22-1 career record in San Francisco.

"I count up these wins, that's 49 wins. It seems appropriate," Harbaugh said

Parting ways means Baalke said "you're an asshole, clean out your office and get the fuck out of here because you're fired".

Damn it was so fun hating on him. Now who can we target on the 49ers?

Interesting to say the least. Here is a guy who's record is 49-22-1, and takes them to a SB, along with two NFC championship games and yet he is out. It must have been the one game he tied which was the deciding factor for letting him go. LOL. But in all seriousness, I don't like him and his antics, but he knew how to win. I'm betting the next 9ers coach will be a former defensive coordinator since their defense is pretty much in place compared to their offense. They will need to re-tool the offense under the new coach. Kraperdick sucks, Boldin and Gore are getting long in the tooth and would be they won't be there next year. Here's hoping their next three years are the same as to what we've had to endure with a rebuild.

I won't miss that whiny punk on the sidelines. The good news is that they probably won't do any better with whoever they hire.

This is as ridiculous as the Mike Martz departure by way of Zygmunt. We know where that got the Rams. I hope it is the same deal for the 49ers.

I don't think it's the same at all. But if it sends the 49ers into a tailspin I'll be willing to lie to you and say you're right. ;):ROFLMAO:

Bad move, his teams were built like brick s*** houses. No team was tougher to beat than SF over the last 4 years.

I love the fact that a team in our division just made such a stupid move by letting Harbaugh go. San Francisco will end up in the basement of the NFC West next year because of it too.

LMAO! This scenario couldn't have worked out better... He left from my biggest rival in the NFL to coach my favorite team in college.

GO BUE!

I agree with most here, very bad move by the San Fran front office. A rich man and his ego are quite an unpredictable combo, and this instance it cost Harbaugh his job.
I think it's a mistake for him to take the Michigan job though, it's hard as hell to turn around a college team unless you get your hands a lil dirty.
Good luck to him.

I don't think it's the terrible move people claim. Harbaugh is a good coach. But it wasn't working. And the strength of his teams was Fangio's defense. If they can keep Fangio and the system in place, they'll be okay.

Harbaugh took that team deep into the playoffs more than once.

Good luck finding a replacement!
