I have to start this with two Points:
* A quote from Roman Gabriel, when he was asked to compare 'Bubba Smith' with Deacon Roman said " Bubba Smith was a Good Football Player, Deacon Jones was a Legend! There's a BIG Difference!!

And * As a Fan and personal friend of Deacon, I hope this piece does him Justice!

Lady's and Gents @ 6ft 5 - 272 I give you The Best DE EVER!!! Deacon Jones:

Jones and his boy's prided themselves on the Fact they worked as a Unit!

A 14th round pick in the 1961 Draft, Deacon is UNOFFICIALLY credited with 173.5 Sacks, which puts him 3rd All Time. I CALL BULL SHIT on that one!!

Question; I Deacon doesn't have the MOST SACKS EVER, Why did the League Name the Sack Trophy after him!?! ( they know! and it wasn't just because he turned the Word Sack into a Stat)

#DaveFan'51, I love your efforts here and I look forward everyday to seeing what you come up with.

You being a personal friend of The Deacon must have produced some wonderful memories. I met Deacon a couple of times up at the Anaheim Hills golf course where he liked to hang out. I even got the courage to talk to him a couple of times and I tell you what! That man could make the story of changing a flat tire sound interesting. Bought him a couple of drinks and then we couldn't shut him up! Not that I wanted too, just a metaphor. Not only was he gracious but so humorous and animated!

Never mind his body of work on the field, you had to meet the guy to really appreciate him.

The most I can claim is that I shook his hand and listened to his stories. I only wish I had a smart phone back then to take a picture.

Keep 'em coming, buddy!

Deacon is ALL world and I too was blessed to meet and talk with him a few times all over the place wherever the RAMS played. After retirement he loved to sign free autographs outside Tampa and RAMS games as he lived nearby. At a Buccaneers game the line was just like he was the President of the U.S. His smile could be seen from space.

I just want to throw some MAJOR love to a man who TRULY was as good an Offensive Tackle as we ever had in Irv Pankey. The man was as solid as a rock for so long it was just unnatural for him to ever miss a game. He just does'nt EVER get the accolades he is SO deserving of. WHAT A RAM!!! Should of made more Pro Bowls but we always had the most OL on our PB team already it was as if he was competing with his own teammates to see who would be the 3 or 4 that would go to Hawaii that year. Our OL was epic for decades. THANKS DEACON AND IRV!!!

Watch Quinn, and Picture him with a Real, Real Mean Streak to him! And Give Him a Bad Mouth attitude, That he really can back-up, and you'll be close! But he needs a Nasty DT at his side! ... Oh! .. He's got one , in Donald!!:D

I LOVE revisiting this Jersey number because It gives me a chance to Look back thru photos of Deacon, and remember our personal Friendship! He once told me, back in 1968 or maybe it was '69, " The only reason I keep playing this game is because I want to go to a Super Bowl!" Of course, I didn't believe him, he loved the game too much for that to be the only reason!
deacon_jones_1960_01_01.jpg

Do you like "Open Field Tackles"!?
deacon_jones_1969_09_13.jpg

"Seeing A QB Scared shitless just before he gets Creamed by the Man"! Not to mention those other 49ers on the ground!
-deacon-jones-billy-kilmer-5.jpg

Aside from the fact that you can't find accurate Sack, Tackle or Assists stats for Deacon, in his 11 seasons, and 151 Games as a Ram, he had 2 INT's for 50 Yds./ a long of 5o Yds. and 12 FR's and 2 Safeties. w/ 1 KR for 12 Yds. His Pro Bowls stretched from 1964 thru 1972.
deaconjones11.jpg

Coach Allen was their for his induction into the Hall of Fame, and vice-versa! Deacon loved the fact, one of, George Allen's Grand Sons was named after him!

GO RAMS!!

Just in case anyone was wondering, the ONLY Player of these^ besides Deacon who had any stats to speak of { Not that they weren't good players, just O-Lineman don't get many stats!} is ..
DT DeMarco Farr - 1994-2000 "GSOT Fame!"
FARR3.jpg

In his 100 games as a Ram he had 3 INT's for 32 Yds. a long of 22 Yds./12 FF's/3 FR's for 18 Yds./and 36.5 sacks w/ 206 Tackles and 45 Assists. and he had 1 PR for 16 Yds.
In his 4 Post Season games he had 1 FR and 1 sack.
JUST THOUGHT YOU STAT-A-HOLICS NEEDED SOME INPUT!(y);):D

I just heard an amazing quote, from Merlin Olsen, about Deacon Jones, So I thought I'd share it!
Olsen " Deacon had a standing, Cash money bet, with anyone on the Team. That he could beat ANYONE in a 50 Yard Dash! And No one could ever Beat him!!" :wow:

Man! I new he was fast, but I didn't realize he was that fast! There where some really fast runners on the Rams in those days!(y):D
