I will be calling on some of our more knowledgeable fans here. I know a little but love learning more and more. I have been a fan of the Rams for about 20 years now. I only played one of year of football in High school.

I've been learning bits and pieces over the years through forums such as this and knowledgeable fans such as many of you.

I know Goff is going to need to work on taking handoffs from center, having his back to the ball (instead of a clear read of the D), etc.

He has a learning curve as many rookies will prove to us this upcoming season. It just is a big adjustment from the college game to the NFL.

What I am really wanting to know is the differences between the playbook of the Air Raid type offense he was running and what we may expect Boras and Groh put together?

Goff mentioned he was excited to get a playbook and start diving in! I love to hear that! But I want to understand deeper. What exactly are these 'Air Raid' concepts? How do they attack the college game? Why is it successful?(I know athleticism is a big piece here). Do you have any resources that I could refer to in order to learn this offense.

The above mentioned is the same as the nfl concepts he will be seeing. I really want to understand the overall concepts of the offenses and defenses better. In both college and the nfl. I realize this is such a loaded question. But it's also a forum where much knowledge can be shared very quickly.

Any knowledge anybody would like to share. . . I would be much obliged to read it and soak it in. Football is one of the hardest sports to find real well written books describing the game in x's and o's.

Thanks friends. Go Rams.

@Corbin I think he'll be starting week 1. It may be a dumbed down offense depending on how much he can pick up and progress with but I fully expect him to be starting week 1.

It wouldn't surprise me if we use the pistol look more often (we did quite a bit last year). While it not quite under center it gives the Tailback (and yes, he becomes a tailback....) a deep look at where the hole is opening. It also gets the QB away from the deep drops. (w/ his back away from the LOS.......after a fake.

I would love to see Goff run the pistol formation. Perfect for it with the weapons we have.

This is the main debate this offseason isn't it? Haha I'm curious to see what will happen but confidence either way it will be the right decision to go.

:LOL:Thanks for sharing the video.

For a scared pizza eating whiner fan he ain't half bad.

Actually, when you watch that video you get the sense that he's got the mental capacity of a franchise guy.

How long will it take him to memorize our 5 page playbook? Seriously, he's a rookie. And no matter how smart he is, no matter how fast he learns, there's going to be hiccups. The bottom line is limit the crucial mistakes, lean on Gurley and the D. Use the athletic TEs we'll have (Kendricks and a rook or two) and get the ball in Tavon's hands or Cooper's hands or throw one up and watch Thomas rip it out of the air!! Really, I'm just going to try and enjoy watching this kid learn to lead this team.

Jared Goff actually ran a different variant of the Air Raid offense (Bear Raid). At face value, it looks like a typical spread offense but it actually utilizes aspects of a pro style offense such as making progressions beyond your first read in spread formations. This is where folks see why he looks more than just your typical spread quarterback, he's more than capable of maneuvering inside the pocket to avoid pressure as some Rams fans here already mentioned. He also had responsibilities of making audibles if the play felt outmatched against opposing defenses; a lot of the adjustments he made worked in his favor.

As for his transition to the pros, I expect some of our offensive staff to take some scripts from the Bear Raid playbook (i.e. shotgun, pistol, and empty tray formations) while taking significant snaps under center. If Goff can master playing under center while still retaining his roots in college, we'll have plenty of mismatch opportunities to work with against opposing defenses while likely getting rid of the misconception that Fisher is a dinosaur who only wants to run the ball, play it safe, and eat the clock

Eli Manning was beat out by Warner in Coughlins training camp that wanted desperately for Manning to win the job. Kurt knowing every snap he took was limited took Tiki Barber and one Half ass wr toomer at a later stage and led the Giants to a 5-2 record. Strahan and a few other defensive players went down for the season and two losses more and Coughlin finally to the desperate screams of the fans for their Savior saw 6 straight very ugly loses by Eli where Kurt was even brought in one game and immediately led the team to its first score of the game in his first series in 3rd quarter. I think we have a VERY YOUNG kid who has skills Eli did not possess at Jared's age. I expect to see an offense tapered to the accuracy and special things this kid can do behind our young and meshing OL. I do not think we will see 6 straight ugly losses that could have been 16 if allowed to start the season by Coughlin. Yet Eli now has 2 SB rings. I'm old and hope we see what I been seeing year after year as Jared has gotten better every year he has played. Don't know when he will cease to improve. Just hope Weinke is up to the task of an Arians to finish the job. Glad we just added some targets for Jared to work with. He finally has his playbook and see's the field next week for the first time as a Pro. GOD BLESS Him !!! Wish we had more competition in our camp and a Kurt Warner to get the kid started out right. They both compare in so many ways. I know it will take time till we upgrade our receivers. I hope we sign Boldin just to teach them all the great things he has learned. He'd be worth it just for that but I doubt Fisher will take reps from all the young ones we have out there. Glad we have 4 arms and the jugs machine to keep them busy. GO RAMS

About two weeks to learn the playbook.

I remember this in detail like you as well because I was a huge Warner fan obviously and was upset we traded him so followed the Giants very closely. I agree with you as well that I think Goff is probably ahead of Eli was when he came out as well. I'm so looking forward to see how OTA's and camp goes heading into preseason to see how Goff is getting it. Honestly I'm kinda wanting him to be held out a little just so he can observe and get it down and create the urge to play which it seems some of our other stars have from not starting right away.
This is a great resource if you want to learn more about the Air Raid offense:

Hal Mumme used to be the coach here at NMSU and he's actually quite a nice guy. Before becoming a manager for Alltel ( a cell phone company) I used to help our biggest account ( NMSU coaches and employess) with their phones and plan and when he'd come in I'd pick his brain about everything. The guy is very intelligent and humble and fun to talk to! When transferring his numbers like how you had to back in the day you could see all the people in his phone and he had the numbers of people like Nick Saban, Bobby Bowden, mulitple NFL coaches and pretty big players ( no Rams or former Rams tho ). Man it was tempting to call some of them and ask if they needed a dedicated water boy! lol

I just watched the Gruden clip. What's not to like about Goff? Got the shyt knocked out of him in his freshman year. Shoulder seperation, only 185 lbs? Gritty! No silver spoon was in this kids mouth when he was born. Made plays with a crappy OL. Given the leeway to make calls and audible at the line of scrimmage? not many spread QB's get to do that. It looks like he is more ready than I first thought.. Goff may be slieght, but he is one tough cookie!

He apparently is weighing about 220 now and thinks he'll be playing between 220 and 225.
