We are heading into the NFL playoffs but it is 2018 and so I have my first Los Angeles Rams 2018 NFL mock draft of the season.

1st Round (28th): Isaiah Oliver, CB, Colorado (6-foot-1, 195 pounds)
227364_b08275d93b794d209b931ea26b365e17~mv2.webp

The talk of the town is that every Rams fan is seemingly falling in love with Iowa CB Joshua Jackson. There is a very good reason for that and it's why he's not going to be available when the Rams pick. No matter, the Rams still have plenty to choose from and one guy I feel is getting a tad overlooked is Isaiah Oliver from Colorado. Oliver for my measure seems to be comfortable playing man-to-man and would be a perfect fit in Wade Phillips' scheme.

With the Rams likely letting go of long-time CB Trumaine Johnson after this season, they are going to not only need to replace his position but hopefully find someone comparable in size. This author believes there is a big possibility the Rams end up signing one of the better CB's in the league Aqib Talib to a one or two year deal to reunite him with Phillips. If that is the case, this might not be the pick for the Rams but as of right now assuming Johnson is gone and Kayvon Webster is coming off of three serious injuries (torn labrum, torn rotator cuff and ruptured Achilles) there might not be another option for a team that finds themselves among the best of the best in the NFL.

Oliver isn't just a plug-in-play solid corner. This kid possesses the length, the talent and the technique everyone in the NFL wants in an "on an island" corner. If Oliver panned out for the Rams, it would allow them to do a lot more on defense. Quite similar to how Marshon Lattimore changed the Saints defense and Jalen Ramsey changed the Jaguars.

3rd Round: Uchenna Nwosu, EDGE, USC (6-foot-2, 240 pounds)
227364_83a4c2adfd5e499b85344bf019536fa9~mv2_d_2048_1214_s_2.webp

Alas, my biggest draft crush of 2018. There is a very unlikely chance Nwosu falls to the third round but then again I said the same thing about my biggest draft crush last year in Chris Godwin...Nwosu is an absolute monster and with the Rams' uncertain future on the edge with Connor Barwin only signed for this season and the prospects of cutting Robert Quinn. It makes a lot of sense to add another edge defender after making waves in last year's draft adding prototype freakish talent Samson Ebukam.

Ebukam and Nwosu would be lethal for any defense but when you factor them into a defense that already has players like Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Mark Barron and Alec Ogletree in their defensive front, now you are talking. One can hope and expect that Ebukam takes significant strides under Wade next season. As for Nwosu, you are getting a relentless edge presence that can excel at just about anything you ask him to do whether it's dropping in coverage, setting the edge or rushing the passer. His awareness and hand-eye coordination are incredible and it's gotten to the point where he can bat passes forward and still make a diving grab to secure a tip-drill interception of his own.

4th Round: Mason Cole, C, Michigan (6-foot-5, 297 pounds)
227364_682aeae9901e4a61877293dc81d316a6~mv2.webp

The Rams signed veteran center John Sullivan who provided familiarity with Sean McVay's system, leadership and the ability to literally plug up a gaping hole on the offensive line as a stop-gap this season. Now, regardless of how well this worked out, Sullivan will be 33-years old next season and also a free agent after his one-year deal ends at season's completion.

Insert Mason Cole, an aggressive, physical plug-in-play center. He doesn't have the quickness or speed to play on the outside so he lacks versatility. Big deal. Cole would be exactly what the doctor ordered to replace Sullivan in the run game. Even if the Rams wanted to keep Sullivan, Cole would be a nice plan to have a center. He's not going to light the world on fire, but he doesn't have to for the Rams to keep having success on the offensive line.

5th Round: Desmond Harrison, OT, West Georgia (6-foot-8, 308 pounds)
227364_effd7f2036c14a6cac5e3fef2298afe7~mv2.webp

He's raw and likely wouldn't be able to play right away but the Rams wouldn't need him to. Desmond Harrison has the overall potential to be a blindside protector at the next level. He has the adequate agility and enough of a body where he could translate well to left tackle.

Why don't the Rams need him to play right away? Well, they have a very good left tackle, Andrew Whitworth. If the 36-year old Whitworth can give the Rams one more year and take Harrison under his wing, the Rams might have a top-10 starter at the tackle position for years to come and just by making a fifth-round selection. Talk about bang for your buck.

6th Round via Lions (Greg Robinson trade): Devron Davis, CB, UTSA (6-foot-0, 205 pounds)
227364_abbf330ef82e4a2ab4c7f538f83e41cf~mv2.webp

A physically-sound hard-hitting corner with enough size to play safety as well in the sixth round? Sign me up! Devron Davis, a former JUCO athlete, now likely a future NFL cornerback. The Rams lack depth at corner and while drafting Isaiah Oliver in the first would fix that, losing Trumaine Johnson just makes the numbers game even again. Davis would be a nice physical presence to add to the list of corners alongside Kayvon Webster, Oliver, Troy Hill, Kevin Peterson and if the Rams bring back stud nickel CB Nickell Robey-Coleman.

Davis isn't a finished product and he's not the best corner out there but he is sure to be a gem that you can steal on day three like I just did.

6th Round via Bills (Sammy Watkins trade): Roc Thomas, RB, Jacksonville State (5-foot-11, 193 pounds)
227364_2b0c2ddb20f74ab6897742dd38bafc25~mv2.webp

We've had reporters, analysts and insiders come on our Downtown Rams podcast. Before the season, one of the common themes we found from them was the idea that Sean McVay would want another pass-catching style of back next season out of the draft. Now, that was before the Rams made defenses bend their will with Todd Gurley but still, we saw in Washington how important Chris Thompson was and we saw this year how limited Lance Dunbar was.

The Rams add what I believe is an absolute steal in Roc Thomas. The former Auburn transfer who can make a man miss in space put on moves at will and take a pass to the house. The Roc and Gurley connection could be called Roc N' Roll. Now, bear in mind last year I was targeting Tarik Cohen, he's not that type of player but Roc could fall in nicely as the scat back behind Gurley and Malcolm Brown. Regardless if he can or not, I believe Roc is a legitimate running back at the next level.

6th Round: Nick DeLuca, LB, North Dakota State (6-foot-3, 243 pounds)
227364_9a5b8a9f8b204dd1850477d1902a2630~mv2.webp

Nick DeLuca was on the pre-season Dick Butkus watchlist and is the total definition of a hard-nosed football player. DeLuca suffered an injury last year which allowed him to be granted a waiver to come back and compete in the 2017 season. He's a tackling machine with great instincts and a see-ball-get-ball approach. There is a good chance he may rise up in the draft but as of right now I would be comfortable adding depth to an already good linebacker group in the sixth-round and in the form of DeLuca.

Not a huge fan of Oliver. I don't like that he did absolutely nothing until this year. If he was such an excellent prospect, how come he couldn't beat out Awuzie or Witherspoon for a job? Hell, even Tedric Thompson did something, and he lined up at safety. Oliver? Not so much. I also feel that he isn't a good fit for Wade Phillips' system. Oliver doesn't press very well, and you need to be able to play press man in a Phillips defense. Would much rather prefer Da'Ron Payne or Mike McGlinchey in this spot and get Malcolm Butler/re-sign Tru in free agency.

I like Nwosu. I don't like him as much as Sione Teuhema, but he's a solid, solid pick.

Also prefer Myles Gaskin over Roc Thomas. Feel that Gaskin is quicker, has better hands, and can run in between the tackles if necessary.

Otherwise? I'd say it's solid.

You make compelling arguments. Thank you for reading. I like Gaskin but I doubt he is there in the sixth. Uchenna is my guy and I really like Colorado corners. Isaiah Oliver I actually think is a fit for Wade's scheme. He struggles in zone coverage more than anything.

Nice first Mock @jakebogen95 I like Oliver and agree he would fit like a bigger glove on O.J. in Wade's scheme, Mason Cole would have me fired up....He would be the Rams Center for the next 15 years and bring back memories to Rich Saul & Ken Iman....I like the extra CB as the Rams need depth at that position and the deveopmental tackle in Desmond Harrison to combine him with Cornelius Lucas and all of the sudden the depth on the OL has some huge upside.

I understand @Memento liking Myles Gaskin over Roc Thomas, however, concur with you Jake that Gaskin will not be there in the 6th...I would be pleased with this draft IMHO.

Thank you for reading! I love what you have to say and I look forward to share my next mocks your way! I thought it was a good way to start the draft season but not step on anyones toes in the postseason.

 Good well thought out post! There is just no way to fully get a real ideal on how this upcoming draft will go due to FA'cy & retirements(Andrew Whitworth) & releases that will take place before the draft but you did a real good job with what we do know currently.I would forecast 2 to 3 corners to be selected with our 8 picks. An Edge Rusher & a NT would be other probable desires. I would look for the Rams Org to go to the draft for defensive starting prospects & go FA'cy in the OL to fill vacancies.

I hope not either but I will always look around to see whats going on through out the NFL to see how it could affect the Rams current roster. I doubt that many Ram fans think in this fashion. They just ignore it. AW was talking about it back in 2015 & here we are in 2018 & he is 36 yrs old. How many starting 36 yr old LT are there in the NFL??? If the Rams go out on top what do you think he will have on his mind?

Best I can come up with is 35 yr old Jason Peters who spent most of this season on the injured reserve(knee). Then the next LT up would be Donald Penn who is 34 just like Peters he missed the later half of the season on the IR(foot) too. The next LT up would be 33 yr old Joe Thomas who also spent the entire season on the IR(knee) ...do we see a pattern here?

Next to the 36 yr old Whitworth the next well seasoned LT still standing @ the end of the season was the 33 yr old Joe Stanley who we watched this past Sunday.

I wouldnt complain about this, I like it. I kind of think we might move back out of the 1st and compile more picks like a 2nd+3rd etc. Just based on how active Snead is with moving around in the draft its just a hunch lol. Unless someone falls to us that we just cant pass up.

Agree. Snead is known for replacing lost/missing picks in the draft, and has done well finding gems at lower picks after his first season as GM.

I just read this & thought this had some relationship with what we were discussing...Thomas is only 33 yrs old where Whitworth is 36.

Browns should make left tackle a second-round priority | Jeff Schudel
01/27/18
http://www.news-herald.com/sports/2...t-tackle-a-second-round-priority-jeff-schudel

The Browns need a quarterback, they need a running back to replace Isaiah Crowell and they need a cornerback who can actually cover a wide receiver.

But since General Manager John Dorsey is fortunate to have picks one, four, 33, 35 and one of the last picks in the second round (depending on how Philadelphia fares in the Super Bowl), he better think hard about spending one of those prime second-round picks on a left tackle.

Joe Thomas might return for a 12th season in 2018, but even if he does, as Thomas himself said, the Browns better start planning for the future without him.

“Some positions that are a little more difficult to patch in free agency,” Thomas said at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards dinner on Jan. 17. “A lot of times quarterbacks, left tackles and cornerbacks don’t hit the market.

“No matter what I decide to do, this is the last year of my contract in Cleveland. I’m also 33 right now. They need to be planning for somebody else pretty soon down the line whether it’s this year or next year.”

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com ranks Orlando Brown, Jr. of Oklahoma 31st overall and Brian O’Neill of Pitt 44th among 2018 draft prospects.

Brown, 6-foot-8, 345 pounds, is the son of the late Orlando Brown, former tackle of the Browns.

“Brown is an enormous left tackle,” Jeremiah wrote. “In pass protection, he lacks ideal foot quickness and knee bend. However, he’s effective because of his size, strength and length. He plays upright, but has quick hands to keep defenders away from his chest. He runs speed rushers around the quarterback and anchors against power rushers very easily.”

O’Neill is 6-foot-6, 290 pounds.

“O’Neill is a very intriguing left tackle prospect,” Jeremiah wrote. “The former tight end has good size and outstanding quickness. In the passing game, he’s very quick out of his stance. He displays the ability to kick out wide and cover up speed rushers. When he shoots his hands on time, he can steer and control defenders. He needs to improve his knee bend/leverage. If defenders get into his chest, he struggles to sink his weight and settle vs. power rushers. He’s very aware vs. twists and blitzers. In the run game, he is at his best on pulls and combo blocks. His quickness is his best asset.”Thomas, a 10-time Pro Bowl player, was picked third overall in 2007. He is rehabbing from a torn left triceps.

O'Neil looked awful in Mobile but he's talented for sure. I would definitely be interested in the 3rd / 4th
