In celebration of National Athletic Training Month, our own Tyler Williams took a break from player rehabilitations and treatment to give us a behind-the-scenes look inside the Rams athletic training room. Before answering any of our questions, he enlisted the help of S Maurice Alexander to demonstrate an exercise that the team employs to benefit Rams players.

STLOUISRAMS.COM: What are you up to you now that the team is in the offseason?

WILLIAMS: Right now we are rehabbing players who had offseason surgeries, formulating a medical analysis on players eligible to be drafted and researching new techniques and products for the upcoming season.
STLOUISRAMS.COM: Explain the exercise that Maurice Alexander performed in the video?

WILLIAMS: The exercise in the video is designed to improve mobility and stability. Medically, the goal is to elongate the entire kinetic chain on the side with the leg back (especially with the hands overhead), stabilize the hip of the forward leg while incorporating balance properties (also incorporating the band). The rotation is done to encourage thoracic spine rotation.
Corrective exercises like this one can help prepare our players to perform with a reduced risk of injury.
STLOUISRAMS.COM: What do you tell the players to encourage them to stay in shape during the offseason?

WILLIAMS: We remind them to incorporate proper nutrition with the offseason training program that our strength and conditioning staff has put in place.
STLOUISRAMS.COM: Why is National Athletic Trainers Month important?

WILLIAMS: National Athletic Trainers Month is important to me because it is our chance to inform others of exactly what it is to be an athletic trainer. Our profession has evolved significantly over the last decade and continues to grow. Athletic trainers are a lot more proactive for injury prevention as opposed to reactive for treatment after an injury has occurred. Additionally, as technology advances, there are many variables in the sports science field an athletic trainer can incorporate to care for an athlete. For us, that's an opportunity to develop a game plan that will enhance the overall health of our players here at the St. Louis Rams.
Tyler Williams is in his ninth year working with the St. Louis Rams where he is responsible for the care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of player injuries in coordination with the head athletic trainer. Prior to joining the club, he served as an assistant athletic trainer at Fontbonne University in St. Louis. Williams earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in athletic training from Truman State University. He is married to Katie and the couple has one daughter, Delaney.
