Gaines is back in the practice. But apparently Matthews' injury is a chip fracture in the sternum. That sounds more serious than I had thought.

Jordan Matthews has a chip fracture in his sternum

The Bills have updated the condition of wide receiver Jordan Matthews after he suffered a chest injuryduring his first practice with the team on Sunday.

Matthews, who was acquired in a trade with the Eagles on Friday, went through the entire practice before checking in with trainers and the team announced he wouldn’t meet with reporters because he was undergoing a medical evaluation. They announced the results of that evaluation on Monday and it will be some time before Matthews takes part in his second Bills practice.

The team said Matthews has a chip fracture in his sternum and his return timeline has been pegged at week-to-week as a result.

Matthews will be able to do work in the playbook and attend meetings while he’s recovering, but the lack of time on the field with quarterback Tyrod Taylor will likely slow his immersion into a new offense. That makes him a good fit as a replacement for oft-injured Sammy Watkins, but not in the way the Bills intended.

The comments to that tweet are worth perusing. Poor Bills fans.
The Browns are almost a tragic franchise. They are making me feel sorry for them, which is an alien feeling for a troll like me....

Damn - I hope we stay lucky this year - the Bills fans must be gutted - both EJ Gaines (phew!) and Mathews going down in training!

Lets hope Sammy Watkins stays healthy for us :)

Dolphins lose starting cornerback Tony Lippett for season

The Dolphins are down a starting cornerback.

Tony Lippett has a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the entire season.

Lippett, who started 13 games last season, was a 2015 fifth-round draft pick of the Dolphins. He suffered the injury during Monday’s practice.

The injury is a significant blow to the Dolphins’ defense and special teams: Lippett played 75 percent of the Dolphins’ defensive snaps and 36 percent of the Dolphins’ special teams snaps last season.

Lippett’s torn Achilles is another piece of bad luck for a Dolphins team that has already lost starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill for the season after a practice injury.

We already lost a good one in Easley :(. But going forward, yes, I hope we stay healthy.

Another not an injury but not worth a new thread ...

Article for reference to Philly being kind of dickish in regards to this. But I also can't believe Mathews is 30 already. Time flies.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/ryan-m...nough-pass-physical-eagles-cut-161309462.html

The NFL is a cold-blooded business in many ways, but perhaps no more so than when teams wait for players to get healthy just so they can get rid of them.

About 11 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, news started to break that Philadelphia Eagles running back Ryan Mathews had passed a physical after healing for months from neck surgery. Mathews was cut by the Eagles before noon, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

When you bemoan a lack of player loyalty in professional sports, remember tales like this one too. NFL players have an “Injury Protection Benefit” in the collective-bargaining agreement. which ensures a player of up to 50 percent of his salary up to $1.15 million if he’s injured during a game and can’t pass a physical the following season (h/t toPhilly VoiceandPro Players Insider). That was clearly the reason the Eagles kept Mathews around for months and then cut him about an hour after he passed his physical. They saved $4 million on the salary cap by cutting Mathews, who suffered a herniated disc in theC6 and C7 spinal segments of his necklate last season and needed surgery. Mathews was slated to make $4 million in base salary on the last year of his three-year, $11 million deal, but that base salary was not guaranteed. Keep this in mind when players fight for guaranteed contracts in the next CBA.

Mathews has dealt with many injuries during his career – that’s a big reason the Eagles were so eager to move on – but teams will probably be interested. Mathews is a former first-round pick with two 1,000-yard seasons. Last season he had 661 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games. He has averaged 4.4 yards per carry in his career, which is good. He’s 30 years old and unlikely to be an every-down player or make it through 16 games, but can offer some help. Teams with depth issues at running back like the Baltimore Ravens, who lost starter Kenneth Dixon for the season already, could take a look at Mathews now that he’s free.

The weird saga of the Eagles waiting all offseason for Mathews to get a clean bill of health just so they could immediately tell him he’s fired without any further compensation is over. Now Mathews can try to find work again, likely at a much lower salary than he was scheduled to make with the Eagles.

Lucky Whitehead broke his foot
Posted by Josh Alper on August 15, 2017

Given the way things have gone for Lucky Whitehead over the last few weeks, it’s fair to wonder if the nickname he uses as a first name was meant to be ironic.

Whitehead’s name and identifying information were used by a criminal in Virginia, which resulted in a warrant for failing to appear in court for the real Whitehead. He got cut by the Cowboys after that warrant went public, but before police finally realized they’d been duped and dropped the charges against the wideout.

Whitehead was claimed by the Jets on waivers, but his chances of making an impact for the team were dealt a blow this week. Jets coach Todd Bowles said Tuesday that Whitehead broke his foot during Monday’s practice.

Bowles said no decision has been made about whether Whitehead needs surgery, but that the wideout will be out for an extended period of time as a result of the injury.

Colts' center Ryan Kelly needs foot surgery and expected to miss time in the regular season. Their backup center Schwenke (cal grad) also on PUP atm. Yikes. I'm sure they'll make a move to get a center.
