My thought on Clowney is that I think our D-line is made up of studs. It seems that when we are up against a team that can exploit our soft coverage, our D-line suffers for it. If our DBs could lock up with more top tier receivers, I think our D-line would truly be great. There ain't no way Clowney is getting to the QB in less than two seconds so I'd say that until we can give our D-line a touch more time to get to the QB, another pass rush specialist isn't a wise move with the #2 pick. Let's instead make the QB clutch the ball a bit and watch our sack total rise.

Good point. We saw a little more of that in 2012. The secondary, particularly the deep secondary, needs reinforcements.

Well only out of PRINCIPLE would I be happy about that decision. "If you don't give us enough then we're taking the best pass rusher in years" sorta thing. Bottom line is I think we are strong at his position and need to trade down and focus on the offense. I'm on the WATKIN/EVANS bandwagon.

I'm having a hard time with Evans. I'm not NEARLY as enamoured at this point. If not Watkins, I'd look elsewhere.

One good S in the defensive backfield changes all that don't you think?

If the DC has that then he can change to coverage and get the CBs a little tighter to the LOS than he could much of last year.

One excellent player back there will go a long way towards making the DL more dangerous.

Agreed. I don't think the 49ers are regretful of their decision to take Davis and Iupati in the first round a few years ago. Everybody would love to have the superstar du jour (WR, RB, QB, etc), but none of them are worth the paper on which their contracts are written if the O-line collapses after 2 seconds.

If we stay at #2, you take the truly elite prospect, which is Clowney. He is a truly elite talent at his position, can we say the same for Watkins or Matthews? They are both good but neither are truly eilte. Megatron, Jones, Green, they are elite and all would be taken over Watkins. Is matthews on the same level as Pace? in my eyes he isn't. Clowney is that truly elite talent, so as i said, if we stay at #2, i hope he is our choice. Still want a trade down more than anything.

If they took him, I would be excited for the potential, but would be curious as to what the hell are we gonna do with Hayes and Sims in the rotation

Move Clowney inside w/ Brockers in sub packages

According to http://overthecap.com/nfl-rookie-salary-cap.php, the Jags cap hit for the #2 pick from last year was $3.8+ million and scales up at about 1 million per year until 2016. I think it is safe to say that whomever gets selected at the #2 spot this year will still be just as costly. For comparison, Long's cap hit was $8.75 million and Quinn's was $1.7 million. Financial-wise, I don't think you can just insert Clowney into a DE rotation and expect to get your money's worth out of all those players. Forgive the pun, but you'd have to take a long, hard look at Chris Long's future with the team given his salary and the need to insert Clowney into the starting lineup practically from day one.

Now, the caveat to all this is Quinn's expiring contract after 2014. Would signing Clowney ensure that Quinn walks after next year or does Long become a cap casualty? The Rams can't afford all these guys, right?

There's a little thing called chemistry that we have in spades with the current players on the DL unit, and while Quinn is the elite player on that unit, Long is the leader. No way I even consider cutting loose a guy like Long for a college stud who may or may not have the passion and the drive to fulfill his potential.

To me this is the bigger issue than $$.

We don't need anymore front 4 guys, we're stacked as it is, if we're getting defensive help we need to get CBs.

I'm a fan of trading out of the 2 spot or taking Matthews if you stay. I just have a hard time justifying spending a premium pick on a DE when our #3 (Hayes) and possibly #4 (Sims) would be starting on about half the teams in the league. Especially when we have other places that need obvious upgrades ex. OL, S, CB, WR.

Sums up my thoughts. While Clowney may be the BPA at #2, its still a luxury pick for us. We have bigger needs

A safety......and that can be had several spots lower than 2.

If they exit the first two rounds with a trade that gives them S, WR and 2 OL with 4 selections it's a win, especially because it'll likely include a first rounder next year. If those players work out to be very good then the rebuild is almost complete and they're still in control of the draft next year.

That's my wish list.

Are there premier safeties in this draft?
