Not to be nitpicky, Merlin, but the comp for Tru would come in '19, not in '18.

True. But I'm not too concerned about it. All that matters is whether the Rams hit on this coaching regime. If they did, losing a FA isn't going to hurt them. I see Trumaine's greatest value as holding down the position for one year and buying them time to get a pipeline of players coming in.

Next year they should have Joyner and a drafted CB coming off strong seasons. Then let him walk, and draft another CB who fits. If they're lucky they'll see a guy like Gaines bounce back this season and sieze or push for a spot, or maybe an out of nowhere UDFA, who knows. All I know is good things tend to happen under great coaching.

Look at the Patriots. They have a culture where they cast aside even high picks that don't fit vice playing them and that accountability helps keep the others in line. They draft and maximize development of the talent they bring in, let FAs walk that can't be signed & take the comp pick, and keep chugging ahead. McVay is trying to instill that, and if he's as quick at picking things up as he seems they have a chance to be a winning organization without sweating guys like Tru.

It's not into the first, but I wondered if we could trade Tru to Cleveland for their 3rd and 4th round picks. Cleveland could convert salary to signing bonus to use up some of their spare cap this year, to make him affordable to cap-poor teams, and then flip him to NO for their 2nd round pick.
I don't think you can re-write the 1 year deal like that, seems to me they would have to extend his deal in order to move that money around. As of right now, he has a 1 year, full guaranteed deal for 16.7

We might have to sign him, trade him then have Cleveland restructure so they convert salary to signing bonus so they take the big cap hit before moving him on. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a way of doing it.

If the rams target a player that is available when round 2 begins, then could see a trade up a few spots to get that player. If that were to happen, trading down in round 3 to recoup what would be given up would make sense. Rams have 8 picks, dont think that number goes down, but would not be surprised if that number increases by a pick or 2. Roster does have some open spots.

He already is signed.
For 1 year guaranteed at 16.7 mill.
They can sign him long term up to July 15th, and I don't see how they can restructure a 1 year deal.
I'm no cap/contract specialist but it seems to me Tru needs to sign an extension to be able to move that money around

Sorry, signing him to an extension was what I meant. It would have to be an agreement in advance between the teams and the players, but TJ would get the security of a long term contract with a contending team, the Rams get the second round pick they said they wanted in return for him, the Saints get a CB who is already NFL ready rather than waiting for a rookie and Cleveland get more draft capital and use up some unwanted cap space. I'm not seeing a downside for anyone.
