The St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints are set to do battle on Friday night to open up preseason action for both teams. The pair last met a season ago on Dec. 15, when the Rams upset the Saints during the regular season, 27-16. What made the home win even more impressive was that St. Louis was without lead signal caller Sam Bradford, who suffered a torn ACL on Oct. 20.

More on the matchup: The Rams will again be without Bradford, which means Shaun Hill will likely take the first-team reps. On the other side of the ball, second-year linebacker Alec Ogletree could see more opportunities to rush the quarterback. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will have all sorts of eyes on his unit as he returns to the Midwest. His new squad has a boatload of talent, led by defensive ends Chris Longand Robert Quinn.

What will head coach Jeff Fisher have in store on offense? Running back Zac Stacy will have to adjust to teams game-planning for him after a breakout rookie campaign in 2013, but when Bradford returns he should have some more freedom out of the backfield. Fans will get a glimpse of how the Rams' balance looks on offense early on.

The Saints come into the preseason with veterans in several key positions, starting withDrew Brees at the helm. He'll be flanked on the outside by Marques Colston, who will give him a reliable target in the passing game. Perhaps the biggest playmaker on the field for New Orleans is tight end Jimmy Graham, who inked a four-year, $40 million contract in July.

But the preseason will feature fewer stars and more intrigue, like the battle at center between Jonathan Goodwin and Tim Lelito.

The defense got some reinforcements during the offseason when the front office added safety Jairus Byrd and cornerback Champ Bailey. Both moves should bolster a secondary that ranked No. 2 in passing yards allowed and fourth in points yielded. Where they struggled most was causing turnovers, where they ranked No. 24. Bailey and Byrd should each have a role in improving that area.
