WARNING: I'm a little old school.
I am a drummer and guitar player so my selections may be more geared towards my own influences and what touched me the most, but this is a thread about YOUR favorites....for whatever reason...or no reason at all  Different music touches different people for different reasons and thats the beauty of it.

Mine.
#1 Bar none, Jimi Hendrix "Machine Gun" w/Band of Gypsies live at the Filmore. Like Lenny Kravitz once said in an interview when asked about that performance..."After listening to Machine Gun i have to take a nap."
Played with a blend of soul, fire, soaring beauty, pure rawness and aggression. The first note of the lead is sick(at 3:50).....and it hangs there....forever.....until he's about to let you off the hook and no,same note again. Sick. The middle section where Jimi is obviously playing in his own world(probably in another solar system)is like listening to a chorus of dying souls poured out thru a piece of wood & 6 strings....played by a man. Unbelievable. The use of feedback in tiny spots here & there is flawless(live performance). Even Jimi's mastery of having to re-tune his guitar towards the end after sucking the life out of it is a treat to behold.
It's also worth mentioning that this song(and performance)was performed with Jimi & Billie tuned a whole step down to D....and because this tune is played in the low end E configuration , tuning a whole step down gives it that dark, meaty, eerie quality.
Here's a youtube cut of this performance.

The rest not in any particular order....
Eric Johnson "Desert Rose" The king of tone finds melody over a fairly unmelodic chord progression and at the same time get's meaty.

Toto ""Hold the Line" Pop shredding at it's best....Steve Lukather.

Pink Floyd "Hey You" Gimour still my favorite living guitar player. The sweet build thru octaves is mesmerizing along with his signature bends.

U2 "Even Better than the Real Thing" I love the erotic sound of the slide here. I almost listed "The Fly" but my nod goes to "Real Thing."

ZZ Top "I need You Tonight" Blues drenched in echo/delay and soul baby.

Rush "Digital Man" On an album where Lifeson's guitar work took a backseat, he tears it up as if unleashed here.

Supertramp "Goodbye Stranger" An unorthodox solo but very moving.

Janes Addiction "Three Days" Dave Navarro's best stuff IMO.

So many more come to mind, but maybe another time.

Stephen Cat Coore is probably someone none of you have ever even heard of. Extremely talented artists in Third World. This is my favorite version of this song and it's live. One of our family favs around the Haile Household... My boys been singing this one ever since....

There are a few off the top of my head.

1.) My man Dimebag Darrell, cut down tragically in his prime, Lord only knows how much more this man had to offer. Pantera is notoriously heavy and abrasive, but this track is pretty deep and features an amazing solo and great riffage all around.

2.) Maybe I've just got a soft spot for those departed too soon. Nah, Randy Rhoads just effortlessly lays it down.

3.) I don't think Angus gets his due credit for being a great axe man. He's mostly known for riffs, but he used to shred solos in his day. The legend has it that when they recorded 'Let There Be Rock' in the studio his amp burst into flames mid solo, but they urged him to keep rolling and kept that as the final cut.

Pretty eclectic set of responses here. Very cool.

For me it's one that many wouldn't think of for his guitar skills but Rolling Stone magazine once called him the most under rated guitar player of all time. I used to crank the stereo and lay down in the middle of the floor and listen to this song. Neil's guitar tells a story all on its own. It's not about banging out a bunch of chords. It's all feeling.

BTW - I saw Eric Johnson in a small venue in Portland. He opened for Joe Satriani - one of my favorite guitar players. I always had a greater respect for Satriani after that. Eric came on and absolutely shredded. Totally blew us away. VERY hard act to follow. But Joe got out there (when he had hair :sly: ) and put on an equally awesome show. For guitar nuts, it was amazing.

I also saw Ottmar Liebert at a winery near here. Flamenco might not be everyone's bag but the dude is flat out incredible.

Great topic.

I'll start by saying "Stairway to Heaven" has a special place in my heart as the greatest guitar solo of all time. It's not because of the complexity or anything. Growing up I liked pop music. Stairway to Heaven is the song that turned me onto rock. One of my better decisions in life :cheese:

I'm sure I'm forgetting some of my favorites, but here's a brief selection:

Maybe the greatest solo of all time?

It's joe satriani, the whole song is basically a solo. The emotion just oozes from his guitar on this track tho.

Great song. About a freinds death. Awesome solo. Get the hair on the back of my neck to stand up just about every time.

The first part of this is a Jimi cover. Later in the song he plays a solo where he only scratches the strings. Crazy dope(starts at about 5:30). A few other solos in there too.

Throwin some Slash into the mix

yeah thanks for the lesson mojo. But I should have been more specific. I'm on a work station and all streaming media gets blocked by our web barracuda :ww:

I should sign in more often while I'm at home and free of restrictions.
