ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Rams plan to hire Gregg Williams as their new defensive coordinator after firing Tim Walton, league sources told ESPN.

The Rams announced Wednesday that Walton had been fired after only one season on the job.

AP Photo/Mark HumphreyGregg Williams will be hired as the Rams' new defensive coordinator, reuniting with Jeff Fisher, sources said.

"I would like to thank Tim for his hard work and contributions to our defense," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement. "I wish him well in the future."

Walton's lone season in St. Louis was something of a tumultuous one. The defense got off to a rocky start in losses to Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco, and rumors persisted later in the year that Fisher had taken on a larger role in calling the defense.

By the end of the year, the Rams ranked 15th in yards allowed per game and 13th in points allowed per game. Walton often drew criticism for lack of aggression in coverage, a criticism buoyed by the Rams allowing a 68.1 percent completion rate, tied for worst in the league.

The Rams will now be searching for a third defensive coordinator in as many seasons under Fisher. Walton replaced Williams, who never actually made it to St. Louis to coach before being suspended for his role in the bounty scandal in New Orleans.

Williams' son, Blake, was the de facto coordinator in 2012 before he was relieved of his duties following the season. The Rams all but signed Rob Ryan to the job last year before he had a last-minute change of heart.

Former Detroit coach Jim Schwartz seemed a logical possible replacement given his ties to Fisher, but has since taken the defensive coordinator job in Buffalo.

Well wait, doesn't Williams advocate a mandatory 15 yard cushion and no blitzing? Oh, never mind, I was think of Robin Williams. Seriously, get corners to play more press, don't be afraid to blitz anywhere, anytime, with anyone, and take your lumps when the offense beats you on it because they will. Williams isn't being brought in to give up obligatory 7 yard passes because nobody is even in the friggin screen they are so deep. This type of Defense will lead to more 1-1 match ups, more turnovers, and more of a Defense that tries to dictates, vs passive. However, these types of D's give up BIG plays when something goes wrong. I'm all for it. I've had enough of bleeding to death from paper cuts. To me it is a skill that exists, or can be taught, as well as a mindset (to me that is the bigger thing). I like it.

And of course, this means we get to use the Sportsbook for the purposes of betting on bounties.

They need safeties who can provide coverage support if they wanna play press coverage with their CB's. I'm good with TJ Mac. However, MacLeod may be better as a nickel CB.

Just wonder if Snead & Fisher promised GW DE Jadeveon Clowney @ #2 then Aaron Donald DT @#13 makes a Old OLer guy like me, feel young. GW loves to bring the heat.

As things often do this inspires the historical perspective in me.
I find it interesting that we are NOW under management that provides our coach with the resources to hire a guy as an assistant who our last owners/ management wanted to hire as a HC once upon a time but was outbid by a team wanting him to be an assistant.
We wanted to hire him over Linny but the Redskins paid him more to be their DC, ,that we have arrived at this point in organizational commitment is heartening to me.

From Twitter it sounds like this is essentially a done deal, so I'm pretty excited now. Its going to be nice to see some swagger back to our defense, go out and attack the other team.

Remove the head.

I wonder if Blake is coming in again too?

He's currently at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., an NCAA Division II program.

I agree but MacLeod is better as a backup. I don't see him as a starter. Ever. If he is, something went wrong.

I have not always liked playing against GW in the past. However with Fisher/Snead together I was hoping for something big to take place to place some additional heat to the trio (AZ/SF/SEA) of rising western divisional teams who we have to play twice a year into the future. GW being added back into the "Fisher Mixture" to work with some of the same coaches GW has worked with in the past brings up the temperature in this division considerably.

Think this will make SF & Seattle HC's smile?
