I was just about to fall asleep last night when a logical thought entered my head. (at least I thought it was logical)

Why did they not put Greg Williams at the helm, as the team's coach for the next 3 weeks?
The probably answer is they are not going to keep Williams once the season ends, but they'd love to keep Fassel as Special Teams Coach next year.

I feel like GW is gone in 3 weeks. Make sense to any of you?

I think that the team is better off leaving the OC and DC alone, let them do their thing. Otherwise if Williams takes the HC helm, they basically have to back fill 2 positions.
This isn't a job interview for Fassell, I don't think he's a thought for the HC job even if they were to win all 3 games

Well they are definitely going to see if GDub can turn this D around and play exceptionally these last 3 games, or it will be his last 3 games with this team. I would like to keep Fassel too for STC also.

That is my thoughts on it as well. Fassel was rewarded with his performance and consistentancy while GW will be let go after the season. I won't be sad to see him go. Dude is a good defensive mind but he sure does fold when we got a lead playing that preventish D he always goes into to get the opposing team back in it. I mean honestly if you do this for a living how do you not see that that will consistently lead to failure from experience?

If you ever thought I was implying Fassel could be head coach next year, I wasn't. I'm not. He won't be.
I was just saying I bet they want to keep him on as STC because he's done a great job.

Further, I have to disagree that they leave our current OC alone. Boras ain't cuttin it.

And one more point I'd like to entertain is: Do any of you think GW feels it's a slap in the face that he wasn't named interim coach? He does have quite an ego you know.

His ego is probably what kept him from getting the interim HC spot and why he may not be our DC next season, but no doubt Boras should not be here next season. He better have his unit ready to perform because if his unit blows it tonight I would fire him after tonight's game, and have him take the Greyhound home.

Haha, I'm thinking he can afford better than a Greyhound, which brings me to an actual legit question that I don't know the answer too. What does he make per year?

I think the chances of him remaining as DC next year are, at best, very slim. It's not outside the realm of possibility, but the new coach might want his guy, and the Rams might want an entire culture change from the Fisher era. Plus, he's a pretty headstrong guy from what I've heard.

Overall, I think GW has done a pretty good job though. It's hard to label any of our defensive draft picks as a bust, certainly not the ones from the early rounds, and most of them have been developed into pretty good players.

His ego is probably what kept him from getting the interim HC spot and why he may not be our DC next season, but no doubt Boras should not be here next season. He better have his unit ready to perform because if his unit blows it tonight I would fire him after tonight's game, and have him take the Greyhound home.

I would have fired him along with Fisher on Monday. No assistant coach contributed more to the misery of this season and the demise of Fisher than Boras did. And I'd bet dollars to donuts that Groh could do a better job playcalling.

Three reasons I think they put Fassel as the interim HC.

1) Fassell is a well loved coach and respected by the players.

2) Fassel is great at his job.

3) Most important in my mind this allows Williams and Boras focus on their units and not divert their attention form their game plan.

He's very headstrong. Go watch any of his post or pregame interviews. He ALWAYS interrupts the person in the middle of their question while they're still asking it. Always! Just that alone tells me he feels he's smarter and more important than everyone else.

That said, he has done a decent job with our defense. At least we're not a bottom 12 defense.

We are having 2 different discussions here
I don't think its a slight at all to Williams because the 3 games left in the season isn't going to be used to determine the HC for next year.
Fassel is given the interim gig because it doesn't upset the coaching balance on the team.
If Williams is named interim, you basically are filling 2 positions, HC and DC. You need someone to take over the defense. Or Williams wears both hats, which is unfair to him.
As for "leaving our current OC alone", I meant for the last 3 games. He's going to coordinate the offense as he sees fit, and isn't going to change anything based on what Fassel thinks.

If Fassel is under contract for next year, he has an opportunity to stick around, which we all would like to see happen, but the reality is that decision is up to the next Head Coach and I'm sure that how the team plays in these 3 games wont have an impact on whether they want him to stay or not

If there were 10 games and a bye week left, its a different story.

Sorry, I don't agree! It makes sense to have Fassel as the interim HC because he works in all phases of the game, and on a short week you keep your OC and DC in place to keep things together. The game plan has probably been in place for a couple of weeks. With all our injuries very little will change for this game.
THE PLAYERS HAVE TO EXECUTE!! THIS IS THEIR FUTURE ON THE LINE!!

Williams isn't very well thought of around the NFL because of bounty gate. Putting him as Interim HC could cause a distraction. Why not give Fassel a shot? Works with different position groups and is a cool dude that the players like.

I highly doubt Williams will be back next year.

Most likely not, however, wherever he goes the defense will be better! Hope he does not end up in the Rams division.

We got to see the younger Fisher sure hasn't been coaching up the dbs... Our depth has gone to crap...

GW is fine, dude got screwed with the CB position this season by losing Jenks and the Rams not bringing in enough quality to replace him. He's routinely developed what he's been given.

But all that aside all these guys gotta go. You don't bring in a new coach and try to make them keep dudes who failed. It's a full house cleaning almost for sure, other than the occasional coach who can show growth in his position group and impress the incoming coach in his interview. So maybe Bones can save his job as the ST coach, but even he is probably gone just because.

I've been generally positive towards Williams, and I think on balance he's done a good job. Players have developed under him, and it's tough to find defensive draft picks we can call "busts" (can't remember the name of the 5th round CB from Miami who didn't make it, but that's about the closest thing). But if there's one thing I've seen lately is that these guys are not coached well in the fundamentals of tackling, and if GW is replaced (as I expect), the new guy better fix that.

That being said, I hope they can find a guy that runs a similar defense to Williams, because I really don't think we need to (or should) start over completely on that side of the ball. Tweaks and some talent upgrades to be sure, but the D is not a disaster the way the O is.
