NFL wants Super Bowl halftime performers to pay for the privilege

As it has grown and grown and grown some more, the NFL has continued to find more and more and more revenue streams.

The latest could be the Super Bowl halftime show. Currently a gig the performer plays for free in order to turn a gigantic international platform into the high profile and profits that go with it, the league now wants a cut.

According to the Wall Street Journal (via SportsBusiness Daily), the NFL has asked the three artists under consideration for the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show to “contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income” to the NFL, or to “make some other type of financial contribution.” Per the report, the idea received a “chilly reception” from the representatives of Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Coldplay.

Regardless, it only takes one performer to bite the hook in order for the NFL to parlay the halftime show into even more of a moneymaker. And it’s entirely possible that the league leaked the development in order to pressure one of the three to blink, given that plenty of other performers who would gladly give up a piece of a pie they otherwise don’t have will now be calling the league to offer whatever the league wants for the privilege of playing to one of the biggest audiences in TV history.

I can see a up and comer maybe paying to get some national attention, but there is no way in hell a established band will pay to perform.

I'd say it's smart business if this wasn't one of a continuous string of things the NFL is doing to grab more and more money from every thing that surrounds them.

At some point, the greed becomes offensive and at what point does that overshadow the sport?

I'd really like to see a boycott organized that would force them to go without any halftime singers. I'll probably dream about that tonight.

Offensive - it's like the Krapdashians whoring out their wedding/childbirth/divorce/arrest ceremonies for sniperazzi photography cash. It's beneath the NFL. They make enough jack; the Super Bowl is damn near a national holiday, a vast celebration. Don't whore it out too.

IF the performers start paying then they should have the right to do anything they want on stage (within FCC limitations of course ) and the NFL shouldn't have a say in it

Also why would someone pay to play at halftime, when any deserving artist can go sell out a 35-40000 seat stadium and get paid

I'd go with just some dogs chasing frisbees at half time but Goodell would probably charge the dog trainers as well.

Believe it or not, some party goers only tune in to see the halftime show.

I wonder what the tv partners think about this? They make many millions from the halftime show advertising - and the NFL might be willing to put a cut rate performer on if the NFL gets paid enough. Just the idea might turn away some viewers from the halftime show, and get the network upset. Which of course is the only thing that would prevent the NFL from doing it.

Get rid of those washed up geriatric bums from the halftime shows and put something interesting on like those weenie mascots that race at baseball games, or clocking hot ladies in bikinis with a huge pair of Double D's running the 40 yard dash....now THAT would be entertaining!!

Greed, at some point you've got to stop grabbing for money in every single way you can and the NFL hasn't done that, they're just getting greedier and greedier as time goes on and at some point it's just like piss off.

Also it'll make the show crappier than it already is, no established band is going to pay the NFL to allow them to do all the work for their show.

It's very smart business It's basically free advertising on televisions biggest stage for the artists in which they reap the reward of being thrust into the limelight for free. Charge em
