ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - During his “state of the NFL” news conference Friday at the Super Bowl site in New Orleans, National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell fielded a question from KMOX Rams insider Jim Thomas.

Goodell was asked about the Rams and Convention and Visitors Commission negotiations over the Edward Jones Dome lease.

“We want to make sure the team gets the stadium issues resolved because they do need to have the kind of stadium that will help support them for the long-term in St. Louis,” he said.

Goodell remains optimistic a deal can be reached to keep football in St. Louis. “I believe the business community and officials want that outcome; I believe Stan Kroenke wants that outcome, and they’re all working together to try to get there.”

Goodell said he understands there is the potential for an arbitration ruling within the next couple of weeks. He said if a public-private partnership is worked out for stadium improvements in St. Louis, the league would be willing to support it and participate in it.

"public-private partnership" is business-speak for taxpayer funded stadium impovements. Is the StL taxpayer going to support spending big-dollars for a sport franchise when there are so many other needs?

Personally, I think the solution lies in a longer term plan for a new facility.

The climate (specifically the economy) is not going to support anything right now. The Rams know this.

So, I see something short term with the existing dome... and longer term plan/commitment (about 5 years out) for something new.

That's my guess.
