Right. over 50 years ago it was much safer and much more socially acceptable to hitchhike. The NFL was also basically seasonal work, with many working offseason jobs since it paid so little. The first rookie minimum salary was set at $9000 - in 1970, 9 years after Deacon hitchhiked. So yes, Gil - there is much more money in the NFL now than in the early 1960s, years before the first Super Bowl.
