Get to know a rookie: Alex Bayer
By Nick Wagoner

We’ve officially reached the closest thing to a dead period the NFL has to offer these days as organized team activities are over and training camp has not yet arrived.

That means vacation time for the players, coaches and, yes, reporters. In the meantime, let’s get to know some of the lesser-known additions to the Rams roster: the rookie free agents.

Alex Bayer

Position: Tight end

College: Bowling Green

Height: 6-foot-4

Weight: 258 pounds

Stat to know: Proved extremely durable during his college career, posting 39 consecutive starts to close his college career. That durability allowed Bayer to produce consistently, including a solid senior season in which he posted 37 catches for 593 yards and four touchdowns.

Road to the roster: Bayer has the type of size and effort that make him an intriguing option as a primary blocker with occasional pass-catching duties. He enters a competition that would seem to allow for him to make a run at a roster spot after the Rams said goodbye to fourth tight end Mike McNeill in free agency. The trio of Jared Cook, Lance Kendricks and Cory Harkey is likely locked into positions, but if the Rams choose to carry a fourth, Bayer could factor into the mix. The Rams also have Justice Cunningham and Mason Brodine with Cunningham particularly intriguing, but Bayer did some good things in OTAs and could be heard from before the Rams make their decisions at the end of camp.

Couple of notes from Gil Brandt on his pro day:
Alex Bayer, TE (6-foot-3 7/8, 257 pounds) — Bayer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.77 and 4.78 seconds. He had a 31 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. He ran the 20-yard short shuttle in 4.42 seconds and the three-cone drill in 7.26 seconds. Bayer did 20 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Bayer — who has 9 3/4-inch hands — caught 37 passes for 593 yards and four touchdowns for the Falcons in 2013. He finished his career at Bowling Green with 10 touchdowns. Bayer has a visit scheduled with the Buccaneers for March 13
