Get to know a rookie: Diontae Spencer

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- We’ve officially reached the closest thing to a dead period the NFL has to offer these days as organized team activities are over and training camp has not yet arrived.

That means vacation time for the players, coaches and, yes, reporters. In the meantime, let’s get to know some of the lesser-known additions to the St. Louis Rams' roster: the rookie free agents.

Diontae Spencer

Position: Wide receiver

College: McNeese State

Height: 5-foot-9

Weight: 161 pounds

Stat to know: As a diminutive receiver/returner, Spencer was McNeese State's Swiss Army Knife, doing a little bit of everything with the ball in his hands. Along the way, he posted one of the most memorable games in the country with 365 all-purpose yards against Stephen F. Austin, a school record. Included in the damage were two kick returns for touchdowns, one from 93 yards and another from 85. He also had a 35-yard punt return for a score.

Road to the roster: Spencer's chances of making the 53 as a wide receiver aren't very good, especially considering the Rams already have their smaller, speedier weapon in Tavon Austin and are pretty well stocked at the other receiver spots. There is, however, the potential for a young wideout to make the roster in a potential sixth spot while Stedman Bailey serves a four-game suspension. It's going to be awfully difficult for Spencer to claim such a spot, but if he can prove a dynamic option as a possible kick returner, he has an outside chance to sneak his way on.
