It's interesting that Florio criticizes the Pead pick. And sure, he's an easy target because he's clearly trending towards BUST. But at the time, the Rams were in desperate need for a backup and successor to SJ39. Picking a RB with a high pick made all the sense in the world. Picking a QB with that pick would have made no sense whatsoever presuming the Rams had reasonable faith in Bradford.
Without the magical gift of 20/20 hindsight (ie not knowing who would become pro bowlers or who would get injured), the only thing I'd really say is wrong with the Pead pick is that they should have stayed where they were (rather than trading down for a 5th that became Rok Watkins) and taken Bobby Wagner. Give me hindsight on who would be the better LB and I'd have taken Lavonte David. QB would not have crossed my mind, except perhaps a developmental guy later on. Again, with 20/20 hindsight on the draft itself and perhaps Doc Brown coming back from the future and telling me that Bradford would have 2 season ending ACLs in the next two years to nudge me in the right direction, Wilson, Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles were all still around when the Rams picked Tru Jo in the 3rd. Lavonte David + Russell Wilson > Russell Wilson + Tru Jo. We could play the 20/20 hindsight game all day long.
For Florio to write an article like this, the pick in question should be obvious as a potentially epic draft fail the moment the pick was made (e.g. Donny Avery over Desean Jackson), that the brain trust is betting big on themselves as the "smartest guys in the room" and everyone else thinks they are the dumbest guys in the room.
To Florio's point but without hindsight, I honestly am still a little miffed that the Rams didn't pick a QB earlier this year e.g. in the 4th rather than Mo Alexander. You add on some hindsight with the emergence of TJ McD and the acquisition of Mark Barron, this becomes even more painful.
