After shining last season on essentially a one-year ‘prove it’ type of deal, Fairley was rewarded with a big contract extension in early March worth $28 million. The four-year deal included an $8 million signing bonus. It would be a huge loss for the Saints interior line, who saw a big boost with Fairley in the mix. Of course, once we know more we’ll pass it along.

What a big blow to him and his family. I don't know how the new contract and gtd money work out for a non-football related health issue that ends a career. I hope he gets to keep the money, cuz fark the owner anyway, he can afford it. Hopefully, he can live with this issue with the right care. Plus, he needs to radically reconsider his lifestyle to make his money last.....

That's horrible :( Wish him the best in being able to stay healthy with that.

Probably will get to keep the guaranteed money, but i'll assume an eventual injury buy-out will be negotiated for the remainder. Chances are both Fairley & the team have some sort of salary insurance for health/cost issues like these.

A real shame for Fairley, I liked him as a quality Rams player and had hoped we could find a way to retain or re-sign him. Get well soon buddy.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...s-nfl-future-in-question-due-to-medical-issue

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the medical issue being tested is a heart condition that previously came up in Fairley's pre-draft physical. The lineman has played with the condition for seven years in the league, Rapoport adds.

When reached by NFL.com last week, Fairley's agent, Brian Overstreet, denied his client had visited a doctor recently.

"He's good, just doing his own thing," Overstreet said, adding that he speaks to Fairley every day. Overstreet declined to say when Fairley would be back to work.

Inside the Saints' facility, information on Fairley's status has been kept tight. One staffer told NFL.com everyone knows Fairley is dealing with a medical situation, but the full details aren't known by many.

Saints place Nick Fairley on non-football illness list

Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley has been visiting doctors recently for opinions about a heart condition that created concern about his ability to continue playing in the NFL.

It looks like the consensus is that it is better for Fairley to put his career on hold. The Saints have placed Fairley on the reserve/non-football illness list, which means he will not be playing football for the team this season.

Coach Asshole Face said earlier this month that Fairley visited with three doctors and that at least one of them told him to stop playing football.

The Saints also have the option not to pay Fairley while he is on the list. Fairley signed a four-year, $28 million contract with the Saints after recording 6.5 sacks for the team last season, but Monday’s news casts serious doubt about whether he will be on the field during the life of that deal.

Trying to look on the bright side here for Nick; he's made some millions hopefully he doesn't have to worry about concussions from here on out.
Good luck to him, he seems like a decent guy.
