ESPN announces contract extension with Jon Gruden through 2021

Any thoughts of Jon Gruden leaving ESPN to return to coach the Oakland Raiders can now be put to rest.

The network announced a contract extension for their Monday Night Football broadcast analyst during halftime of the game between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears on Monday night. The deal extends Gruden’s deal with the network through the 2021 season.

Play-by-play man Mike Tirico said on the broadcast that the deal will keep Gruden “out of coaching.”

That’s likely true, at least in the interim.

Gruden’s name will still be thrown in the mix for any number of head coaching vacancies in the future. However, the new deal would seem to eliminate him from contention for any openings this offseason, including his former job in Oakland.

I like him as an analyst and I never thought I would. I figured him as cocky and arrogant - I was wrong.

As a coach though, he's just the overated guy that won a Super Bowl with Tony Dungy's team

Just to be fair, if we are going to do that, he won the superbowl against the team he coached the prior year.

I like him too. He's funny and able to laugh at himself. He and Tirico doing the play by play have a nice raport in the booth on MNF.

Chris Collinsworth and Al Michaels have my #1 vote for the best announcers.

Let me tell you Mike, Chucky is the worst color analyst this game has ever seen.

I actually prefer the opposite. Gruden is more dynamic than the other two.

Spare me! Jon Gruden is captain obvious on a good day of commentating. On the average day, he is just flat out confused.

Which is more than Dungy ever did with "his" team. He went 11-5, then 10-6, then 9-7 and his playoff resume after losing the NFC title game to the Rams in 99 was losing two wild card games, one and done two years running. He couldn't even win the division with "his team". The Bucs did the smartest thing possible, they brought in a guy to "win now" because under Dungy's regime the team was falling down and the window they had was only a year or two more.

And Dungy didn't select players. He's one of the most over rated HC's in recent memory. He and Holmgren are probably tied for that in my mind.

Gruden started his college coaching career at Southeast Mo State in CG MO people who knew him back then tell that he would tell people he was going to be an NFL Head coach some day. Gotta give the guy credit for the work and dedication it took to make that dream come true.

As much as he talks I'd like to have been there when he interviewed for jobs ,I'd bet he had an analysis for every player on a roster how he thought he could up the guys play just a driven human being ,must be a pain to live with though.

If I remember correctly, The Rams @ Bears was the NFC championship game , and also the game that McMahon wore the head band with "ROZELLE" written on it

Better than listening to Madden pointing out all the obvious crap - it's like driving with the wife

Pirate Face needs to work on his reading from the cue cards skills. It may appear he purposely makes those dramatic pauses during the telecasts, but I'm convinced he's just doing his best to read out loud and it takes him a little bit. Dude doesn't talk like that when he's just speaking with someone.

I'm not a fan of his act.

Collinsworth is the most enjoyable to listen to.

Chucky talks too much and goes hard-on for everyone, even mediocre talent. So weird.
