Chargers on Weddle fine: He stayed on field at halftime without permission

Chargers safety Eric Weddle was fined by the team in Week 15 for failing to return to the locker room during halftime so that he could watch his daughter perform in the halftime show during the team’s game against the Dolphins.

Coach Mike McCoy confirmed that Weddle received a fine, reportedly $10,000, for remaining on the field without getting permission from the team.

“Yes we did,” McCoy said. “We have a policy here, and a situation took place two weeks ago at our stadium. So yes, we did fine him. It’s an organizational call. We have a club policy here, and there are certain things we have to do as a football team at halftime to make adjustments, and things like that. That’s why we did that.”

That fine came to light on Monday after Weddle was placed on injured reserve and told that there wasn’t enough room on the team plane for him to travel with the club to Denver for the season finale. Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston said, via ESPN.com, that players on injured reserve have not been barred in the past, but they don’t have the space with 17 players on injured reserve right now.

Weddle’s agent David Canter said that they plan to file a grievance through the NFLPA regarding the fine. Weddle is set to be a free agent and the already dim chance he’d return in 2016 has probably gone away entirely.
---------
That’s just pathetic. You’re up 23-0 at halftime, what are you going to say in the locker room?
---------
In a league that’s “all about the integrity of the shield” (yes that’s sarcasm trolls), this is some serious BS. You want a league with role models? You can start by not fining a guy 10k for watching his daughters halftime performance. What a classless organization.
---------
Weddle is a turd. He should have asked permission to skip halftime. The Chargers should have then granted it, they’re going nowhere this year (other than out of town), and if they’d have denied his request, THEN Weddle would have had something to complain about. As it came down – the team is right, he’s wrong. What a dumpster fire, second only to the one burning brightly in Santa Clara. San Diego fans deserve a better fate.
--------
Another classless move by a two-bit organization.
It’s obvious the Chargers don’t respect Weddle; they refused to even talk to him at the start of the season regarding an extension.
Granted, he should have asked – but are we SURE he didn’t?

Eric Weddle And The Chargers Seem To Be Done With Each Other

Eric Weddle has spent all nine seasons of his pro career with the Chargers, and after he didn’t receive a contract extension before the season, it seemed likely that he’d sign with another team when he became a free agent. Now, the prospect of Weddle leaving the Chargers is a virtual certainty. And the breaking point apparently revolved around Weddle’s daughter performing in a halftime show.

The Chargers played their final home game on Dec. 20 against the Dolphins; San Diego led 23-0 after two quarters. Weddle remained on the field to watch his daughter perform in the halftime show with the cheerleaders. The team fined him for violating the team policy. Coach Mike McCoy gave a vague explanation of the reasoning behind the decision:

“We have a policy here, and a situation took place two weeks ago at our stadium. So yes, we did fine him. It’s an organizational call. We have a club policy here, and there are certain things we have to do as a football team at halftime to make adjustments, and things like that. That’s why we did that.”

McCoy wouldn’t reveal the amount of Weddle’s fine, but the safety’s agent, David Canter, told the Associated Press that the amount was $10,000. Weddle hurt his groin in Thursday’s game against the Raiders, and on Monday, the Chargers placed him on injured reserve, ending his season.

Later that day, Canter went off on how the team handled his client, and claimed the Chargers told Weddle and the other players on injured reserve that they wouldn’t travel to the last game of the season because there wasn’t enough room on the plane:

DEC Management @davidcanter
Team has multiple players they aren't putting on injured reserve that can not play this weekend but have decided to put @weddlesbeard on IR

DEC Management @davidcanter
Team didn't announce injured players couldn't travel to Denver until after putting @weddlesbeard on IR. Said plane is to small. Hysterical

In all fairness, this is the plane

You can call me every name in the book. What the organization did and how we have been treated is beyond reproach.

So, that’s how this relationship ends. Not with a sendoff, but a possible grievance filed through the NFLPA. Even if the Chargers had no intentions to re-sign Weddle, their methods were puzzling. The guy lingered around the stadium for hours after the last home game to sign autographs for fans and take in the atmosphere, and he’ll be nowhere near the team in Week 17. San Diego’s messy loss will be another team’s gain. Hey, the Raiders just had a spot open up at free safety.
-----------
I’m a long-time Chargers fan (since Don Woods, Gary Garrison and others). Looks like the team is trying to completely destroy every bridge to fans, certain players, the city, etc. Kinda sad, actually.

That said, Weddle’s ok, but not great. Don’t get fooled by the interception totals.

Gonna be interesting when he signs with another team & folk more closely watch his play.

Chargers are a garbage organization. If I were the owner I would refund that fine, and then get to the bottom of why my org cannot better handle a simple situation.

The man was absent from his job without permission, essentially he was awol. A fine is perfectly justified in this instance. Shitty, but justified. He should have approached the team ahead of time and gotten permission. People make sacrifices for their jobs all the time for a lot less money than he makes.

On Dec. 20 against the Miami Dolphins, Eric Weddle did not return to the locker room at the end of the first half with the rest of his teammates, choosing instead to watch his daughter perform with the Junior Chargers Girls on the field at halftime and did not ask permission to do so.
--snip--
Weddle wasn’t the only player with a child performing at halftime, but he was the only one who did not join his teammates or coaches in the locker room.

They act like the fine hurts him. Its more similar to when your job charges you $10 so you can wear jeans the next two weeks.

If its my kid, everyone in that locker room would know my daughter was going to be performing and they'd probably be sick of hearing about it... The idea that I wouldnt say something to the coach is beyond me.

Seems like Weddle was sticking it to McCoy and knew he would make him look like an ahole if he got fined

Weddle didn't seem to put forth his normal effort in this season. Think he's just done with that team and it's coaches.
