Found this article which seems it could be helpful for those of us that have never been. Of course, I'd like to hear the local's view on this guy's opinions. He sounds a little jaded for whatever reason.

Sounds about right. The concessions are as slow as molasses. The Dome is a great place to actually SEE a game because of the seating, but is also bland and uninspiring.

The area around the dome is indeed a mixed bag. Lot's of restaurants and bars but also blighted areas (north and west of the dome mostly) you would be advised not to go into. You also don't cross the river to East St. Louis unless you are looking for gentlemen's clubs, and only the big clubs, or so I've heard.

It's true that the opposing fans come in large numbers because it's relatively cheap. There's rarely any incidents of any kind. St. Louis fans tend to be very polite and good natured. The crowds are muted when the Rams suck, opposing fans sometimes take over the noise making, but that changes in a hurry if the game is a good one. The dome CAN get really loud when the fans are inspired.

Since you eliminated the north, west and east, it should be safe to the south, right? Actually hoping to walk down to the arch and Busch Stadium on Sunday after the game. That's all good, right? Does Busch Stadium do tours or anything?

Yes, south, it's fine to walk to the arch and Busch stadium. I don't know if they do tours, but ballpark village is there.
