Around the League previewed all the big NFL Honors awards this week: MVP, Rookies of the Year, and Coach of the Year. Up next ...

The Defensive Player of the Year has yet to emerge. Someone could put together a dominant December and become the consensus favorite for the award, but that hasn't happened yet.

I remember writing last year that Von Miller's 2012 season wasmore than worthy for the award most years. He came in second in the voting, but that campaign is easily better than anyone this year. (You could make the same argument with Aldon Smith's 2012 season.)

This award will require some tough decisions and a lot of homework from voters. It reminds me of 2010, when Troy Polamalu won the award with only 17 of 50 votes. (Clay Matthews was second.) That was another year without an obvious choice. Here's how my list would look now:

1. J.J. Watt, Houston Texans: Voters typically don't reward players on awful teams, with Seattle's Cortez Kennedy being an exception in 1992. (Kennedy won despite his Seahawks team going 2-14.)

Watt's sack numbers aren't as flashy as last year, but he actually has more quarterback hits than he did one year ago at this time. He has three forced fumbles and leads the league in tackles for loss. Watt also passes the eye test. He's the most dominant defensive player in football. Isn't that what this award is about?

2. Robert Quinn, St. Louis Rams:Quinn is another player that I won't punish for being on a losing team. He's the best pure pass rusher in the league and strong against the run. The award should be about the best defensive player, not the most passable defensive player with a cool narrative.

3. Luke Kuechly, Carolina Panthers:He's probably the favorite to win the award because he's a top-tier player, and the leader of one of the best defenses in football. He's great in run support and pass defense. It would be hard to argue with Kuechly as the pick.View attachment 1038

4. Richard Sherman, Seattle Seahawks: He's not having an all-time "shutdown cornerback" season, but he usually erases his competition each week. That changes the way Pete Carroll can construct the rest of his defense.

5. Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks:I'm not smart enough to understand Thomas' greatness. That's probably true of anyone that doesn't break Thomas down on All-22 footage each week. He's a player that doesn't show up in the stat sheet a ton, although his solo tackle numbers will soar past his career highs.

This week's matchup against San Francisco could be a time for Thomas to shine with a lot of threats for the 49ers in the middle of the field. (Most of the ATL crew picked the 49ers to win.)

Thomas' closing speed and awareness are exceptional. Like Bob Sanders in 2008, Thomas has a chance to become a voter favorite.

Honorable mention: Patrick Peterson, Justin Houston, Ndamukong Suh, Gerald McCoy, Muhammad Wilkerson and Vontaze Burfict.

Quinn should be #1 not #2. That's just my opinion though. Watt is probably #1 because of his amount of tackles compared to Quinns. Plus I'm biased, I guess. haha.

Watt's #1 because he's been here before. Those players usually get the benefit of the doubt when things are even close with newcomers. Ie Brady/Manning/etc.

Yeah I suppose you're right. Quinn will have to have an amazing finish to the season to win it. Still, being #2 is one hell of a year.

Quinn should get a boost this weekend, playing against the beleaguered Cardinals OL. (If they weren't beleaguered before, they probably will be after a weekend of the Quinn & Long sack pack duo.)

I think Quinn will get 2 sacks and a lot of pressures / hurries this weekend. I just don't know if they can stop him. If they choose to shut him down, that just helps our defense have other opportunities.

I would rather The Mighty One deliver at least three sacks along with his tag team partner, Chris. The Rams ransacked the Cards for eight sacks in last year's first meeting. I would love to see them top that. If they can rock the immobile Carson, he tends to get skittish and pass before he wants to, setting up easy pickings for the likes of Jenks.

They need to allow the Zac & Benny
duo to pound the Cardinals defensive wall for 4 quarters, mixing in passes when the back seven tries to crowd the box. Patrick Petersen will almost certainly be assigned to man up with Chris Givens. Wouldn't be a bad idea to send Tavon deep every now and then. if Cookie draws extra coverage, be ready to take advantage with Tavon, Chris, or Pettis. I still would love to see Schotty mixing in Isaiah Pead on third downs to take advantage of his receiving and broken field running skills.

If we could repeat that defensive game from last year that would be impressive. Carson Palmer is one of the least mobile QB's in the league. We need to trap him quickly and the secondary needs to cover well. If Walton does that soft, "off" coverage shit i'm going to send a letter to Rams park telling them to fire the fuck out of him. And if it's not all on him... than we need new coaches or they need to re-evaluate themselves. Off coverage is NOT how you beat the cardinals. You gotta make Carson hold the ball, so play tight on the WR's and get the pass rush going.

I'm confident we can stop the run. That's been the #1 priority for the Rams and i expect them to continue that to try and make the Cardinals one dimentional.

Quinn is such a beast, it'd be awesome if he could get DPOY to put the Rams back on the map again.
