There's now a 'distinct possibility' that Raiders' Vegas move is delayed until 2021

While the Raiders' proposed timeline has the team making a move from Oakland to Las Vegas in time for the 2020 season, there is now a "distinct possibility" the move could be delayed until 2021. Raiders president Marc Badain said this week that if the Raiders and the stadium authority board in Las Vegas do not come to an agreement on a lease at the owners meetings later this month (May 22), they would likely have to delay the move another year.

"In order to approve a lease, you need full membership, and the league has four meetings a year: one in March, one in May, one in October and one in December," Badain said after a public meeting of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority board, per CSN Bay Area. "So, if you miss the May deadline, you push to October, we would lose a year, and everybody wants to get this project going, everybody wants to get these guys to work. So we didn't want to miss that deadline."

The actual move to Las Vegas was approved by a 31-1 vote (the Dolphinswere the lone "no" vote) at the NFL's March owner's meetings, and next up on the agenda is the lease. Stadium Authority board chairman Steve Hill said he believes the two sides can come to an agreement on a conditional lease that can be presented at the meetings.

"There's been no 'get this done or else' type of approach on this request (from the NFL), certainly done in a very appropriate manner," Hill said. "But I understand, particularly from the Raiders perspective and really from ours as well, the desire to move this forward. They are investing obviously significantly in this community and they have started to do that, and I wouldn't want to move too far forward if I didn't know that I had a deal either."

The proposed lease is expected to run 30 years and cover capital expenses that come up as the facility ages, per CSN. The Raiders' lease in Oakland currently runs through 2018, though Raiders owner Marc Davis said he'd be willing to stay longer than that if the fans of Oakland want to keep them around through 2019 while they await construction in Las Vegas.

"We have two more years of lease options for Oakland right now," Davis said. "If the fans would like us to stay there, we'd love to be there for that and possibly talk to them about extending it for maybe 2019 as well and try to bring a championship back to Oakland."

It's unknown whether he would extend the same option for 2020 as well, but one would presume that would be the case, given his feelings on 2019.

I don't think Davis has a realistic feel for what he's going to get at the gates in Oakland. Granted, the Raiders are an outlier in their fan base, but playing in a city when everyone knows you're moving tends to not end well in attendance.

I expect that storyline to change dramatically once the season starts, especially if the Raiders aren't as good as everyone expects them to be.

I think a move to Vegas is absolutely ridiculous. I don't see it working well. Rookies with all that money and distractions.

Good....why not add 4 more expansion teams....Keep the Raiders in Oakland...build them a stadium...then add

St Louis (see, I'm looking out for yall), Las Vegas, something near Alabama or Nebraska....give them dudes some pro sports....and maybe London.

The move made sense to me. The Raiders like the Chargers and Rams feel the need for a new stadium. I know the current stadium is old a in bad shape and I knew one was not happening in Oakland just like San Diego. So Vegas seemed like a good answer. They have money and 2 Million or so area population and visitors. They need to get the agreement ready. Seems like everyone (except Miami) wants it done.

adding 4 more teams messes with the 4 division/conference alignment. 36 teams means moving back to an unbalanced schedule, and also brings out the argument to expand the playoffs, expansion drafts, 0-16 teams .... wanna watch a league where there are 5 cleveland browns? I dont ....

Plus, it'll always be a home game for the visiting teams' fans, or a 50/50 split EASILY.

Cleveland shouldn't have the same owner if Hue and that GM don't fix them. I think Cleveland is on the come up...So are the Jags....

There will always be teams on the bottom...nothing wrong with that...Hell, we need some easy wins.

That's probably because you have no idea what Las Vegas is. I think you need to get out more.

Totally disagree. I realize it's not gonna' be Pittsburgh or Green Bay, but Raider fans will be well represented, especially if they keep winning.

lmfao, yea I don't think I need to visit the place to understand the distractions. They are pretty well documented. lol now tell me about how great of a city it is. How it's a family town and a great place to raise your children. Lol who would ever be tempted by that amount of gambling and prostitution.

What 22 year old millionaire faced with those very things would ever cave to the temptation right? Lol

I'm not saying vegas is a bad city by any means, hell it sounds like a hell of a good time. But it will take some serious leadership to keep these kids on track, I hope they considered that.

How many Raiders fans live in Vegas? How many Raiders fans live in Oakland/NorCal? You are not going to have 60,000+ Raiders fans traveling there for EVERY HOME GAME compared to a different fan base each game that will travel (or already live in Vegas) because Vegas is a destination city to see an away game.

I imagine the hotels/casinos/airlines will be offering nice packages to attract plenty of fans & non-fans alike, as long as its an air conditioned dome, they should do very well. Vegas hotels will build packages not only around Oakland Raiders fans, but adversary cities where opposition teams will be coming from, ... their data bases are filled with potential customers from all over the world. If you have ever stayed in a Vegas hotel/casino, you are likely to have received a discounted offer at a later date, sometimes years later.

I'm not going to claim they have 60k there for every home game. But being from Nevada and spending time in Vegas and having friends there in Vegas they have a very strong fan base there. Likely the strongest showing of any NFL team.

Maybe? I know there are a ton of Cowboys fans there. There's a fan club there, and they do a Vegas takeover, where people from all over fly in. They'll have players come to sign autographs, etc. A few of my friends went to the strip club when with a few players. Haha
