Screw him. He was too lazy to improve himself with us. Good luck if you decide to re-sign him long term.

You guys had young Tommy Edman and traded for Nolan Arenado. Where was Carpenter going to play, SS?

Lazy? The guy who traveled around the country working with hitting gurus in California, Oklahoma and Louisiana to straighten out his swing. That lazy guy? Then he signed a triple A contract with Texas. Sure as hell doesn't sound like lazy to me.

BTW, that was a smart move by St. Louis. Carpenter was getting old. But just like what happens to some guys when they put on the pinstripes, he's rejuvenated. 30 GP, 13 HR, 31 RBI, .364 avg. Certainly not the 18 HR, 59 RBI and .293 for Arenado but like Dieter said, "thank you".

We traded for Arenado because Carpenter was atrocious at third, and Wong had all but displaced him at second. Then when Wong left, he had every opportunity to regain the spot. He had every opportunity to displace Edman (who was nothing like his current shortstop version, being more of a super sub), and he didn't. He had every opportunity to improve his swing, his approach, and his defense with our staff. He didn't do any of that. He reverted to his TCU days, where he was lucky to get a thirteenth round selection used on him; he was lazy and didn't want to improve himself then, and he was lazy and didn't want to improve himself with us in his final years with us.

Good for the Yankees that they're getting the most out of Carpenter. If they sign him to another contract, particularly one with more than one year, they'll regret it like we did.

He'll be 37 at years end, very doubtful they'll offer him much if anything, other than maybe a WS trophy....
That said, he was a darned good ball player for you guys and the Cards left him without a position seeing they brought in Goldschmidt to play 1st, Arrenado for 3rd and could have had him DH but they gave that honor to Mr Pujols
Alas, grateful you guys didnt put him thru the paces that he chose to go thru himself

Unsuccessful = lazy?

What exactly do you attribute to him being called "lazy"? Where are the reports he didn't attempt to improve? Like Dieter said, he was one of the Cardinals best players for a number of years. He's not a .300 hitter, he's a .270 hitter with a .373 OB%. And he can play multiple positions. Why the Cardinals never tried him in the outfield is their loss.

I won the beerbelly FBB league one year with Carp on my team, a WS would be a great double down!

They showed that on MLB network last night. Carpenter, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Ruth. Not Mantle. Not Mattingly. His numbers in all games played are ridiculous. 30 games played. 27 for 75 (.360). 22 runs, 31 Rbi. 4 doubles, 13 homers, 70 total bases, 12 walks. A .473 OB% and a .933 Slug% for an OPS of 1.406. Certainly we know he won't keep those numbers for the rest of the season but Boone is riding him for as long as he can. Other guys will pick him up when he starts to come back to reality. Stanton is having an excellent season. Hicks started to come into form before fouling a ball off his shin. I thought Donaldson was coming around but I'm beginning to think the best we can expect there is he gets hot for a week or two. Which is fine so long as he continues to be the best third baseman in the A.L. LeMahieu has heated up (.321 in July; 9 for his last 25.... .360). And Judge is Judge.
