GRAPEVINE, Texas – Fox NFL Sunday color commentator Daryl Johnston gave his thoughts on who had the best draft in the NFC over a week ago.

Johnston was at the 10th annual Taste of the NFL: The Ultimate Cowboys Tailgate Party, co-hosting the event with former Dallas Cowboys running back Preston Pearson and Kent Rathbun from Iron Chef America to raise money for the North Texas Food Bank.

While Johnston was unable to watch the complete draft, the fourteen-year sports broadcaster was impressed by the St. Louis Rams’ first day picks in Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson and Pittsburgh defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

“In the NFC West right now, when you look at Seattle and San Francisco, the way those teams have been successful, a lot of it has to do with the strength of their offensive and defensive lines winning the battles in the trenches,” Johnston said.

Johnston, who called three St. Louis games in 2013, also believes that the Rams have “taken some big steps,” and certainly the footprints from these strides are evident in the team’s record since Jeff Fisher became coach. Fisher’s 14-17-1 mark is the best two-year record since 2003-04 when the Rams went 20-12 under Mike Martz.

The difference between the Rams of 10 years ago and the Rams today is the competition in the NFC West. Although Seattle made the playoffs as a wildcard and also won the division in 2004, there was no dominant second team, as is the case with the San Francisco 49ers. Fisher’s NFC West is stouter than the NFC West in which Mike Martz coached, and dominating play on both sides of the trenches is the name of the game. Two out of Fisher’s three drafts have featured a defensive lineman selection, and Robinson is the first offensive lineman the Rams have taken in the first round since Jason Smith in 2009.

“They added some skill players on the outside, and now they’ve added some more depth and key players inside,” Johnston explained. “I like what the St. Louis Rams did the first day.”

With five first round selections and four second round picks since 2012, the Rams have added premium talent to their club. Seattle may suffer a Super Bowl hangover, and San Francisco could meltdown like their coach. The 2014 season could be St. Louis’ time to post their first winning record since 2003 when they won the NFC West and earned a first round bye.
