That would spoil one significant trading partner.

COMMENTARY | The Washington Redskins should be paying very close attention to the Cleveland Browns as they search for a new offensive coordinator.

According to recent media reports, the Browns are talking with former Redskins' offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan about a potential job opportunity. If Shanahan ends up in Cleveland, it would make perfect sense for both franchises to get together and strike a deal involving quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Here's why Cousins joining forces with Shanahan in Cleveland would be an ideal fit for both the Redskins and the Browns.

Why the Redskins should be eager to reunite Cousins and Shanahan in Cleveland
The Browns are the ideal trade partner as the Redskins attempt to get the best possible draft pick compensation in exchange for their talented young backup quarterback.

Courtesy of the infamous Trent Richardson trade with the Indianapolis Colts, the Browns are armed with an additional first round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft. Although the Redskins chances of getting a first-rounder in exchange for Cousins are slim, perhaps the Browns could be willing to part ways with their lower first-round pick if they hire Kyle Shanahan as the team's next offensive coordinator.

Cousins' value to the Browns would be higher than any other team, due to the potential presence of the coordinator who's provided tutelage to the young quarterback from the beginning of his NFL career. So if there's one team that could deal a first for Cousins, it could be the Browns if they hire Shanahan.

Even if the Browns aren't willing to sacrifice a first in return for one of the game's hottest young quarterback prospects, they still own some other draft picks that could be appealing to the Redskins.

Cleveland's second-rounder is only one spot below the one that belong to the Redskins, so that pick could be enticing to Washington. The Browns also possess an additional third round draft pick that was previously owned by the Pittsburgh Steelers. With that pick in hand, maybe the Browns would be willing to deal their own third-rounder for Cousins.

The Redskins would be sitting pretty if they're able to acquire any of the previously mentioned picks from the Browns for the rights to Cousins. Hopefully, Shanahan goes to Cleveland so the potentially appeasing trade on paper can morph into reality.

Why the Browns would benefit from a Shanahan, Cousins package deal

By employing Mike Shanahan's son, the Browns would attain the services of a young coordinator who despite so-so results in Washington, still possesses the potential to become one of the league's better offensive strategists.

By trading for Cousins, the Browns would provide Shanahan with a player he's helped shape and mold into a quality signal caller. With talented playmakers Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron already on board, reeling in Cousins would give the Browns the makings of a potentially explosive offense.

Of course, if the Browns want to acquire a talented young quarterback, they could just simply select one with one of the draft picks they already have. Owners of the fourth overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, the Browns could easily end up with the likes of Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater or Blake Bortles.

However, if Shanahan gets hired, the Browns could utilize the fourth overall pick to concentrate on a position other than quarterback in their attempt to improve their team. Meanwhile, they could use one of the other selections previously mentioned to land themselves a signal caller who already has a rapport with their new offensive coordinator, if they hire him.

Hopefully, Shanahan will land with the Browns, which would pave the way for an eventual trade involving Cousins and the Redskins in a move that would make sense for both organizations.

Funny you should post about this because my Uncle is a Browns fan and two years ago I suggested they draft Kirk Cousins in the 3rd round because IMO he was a great fit playing for Michigan State and would be used to the weather. Instead they draft a QB who was a shot gun QB and was 35 years old.

IMO Cousins does not go to the Browns because Jimmy Haslam wants some sizzle and that sizzle is Johnny Football for better or worse. IMO the Browns and Rams make a trade that Mike Holmgren missed out on two years ago and the Browns get Johnny Manziel. The Rams get the 4th and 26th pick because the Browns are smart enough to realize the 26th pick will be higher than their 2015 pick.

IMO the Vikings could be the landing spot for Cousins especially with the Vikings playing outside for the next two years and if Zimmer can straighten out the defense they could be back in the playoffs in 2014.

I haven't really seen anything out of Cousins that would suggest he is worth a first round pick. A second maybe, hopefully one of the QB deprived teams doesn't fuck our trade options up for us..

I liked Cousins coming out, but he hasn't shown anything to suggest that he's worth anything more than a back up spot, so in other words perfect for the Browns.
