When I first read about his tryout I looked him up, found that he was 5'7 1/2", 161 lbs, and immediately dismissed his chances. Then I watched a couple of youtube videos (highlights and pro day interview) where he claims to have run a 4.3/40 and some had him at a 4.2 something / 40 and I must admit, that I became more intrigued.

And while it was just in shorts, I read the following and I'm beginning to believe he might have a real shot to make the roster:

And especially after I looked up Taylor Gabriel of the Falcons and found that he is about the same size.

And this is what Gabriel did last year.

If he makes it, he won't have Julio Jones opposite him, but if he has any other characteristics like Gabriel the Rams may have found a gem with this kid. Some don't want to hear it, but speed kills.

Taylor Gabriel gets North & South very quick! I hope TA starts doing that

Hmmmm another fast midget. Yes speed kills but can he catch? Can he run routes? Can he do anything other than run a 4.3 in his underwear? Great we signed the kid to our 90 man roster. Wake me up when we know something about him other than a youtube highlight real. CBS had 150 WR's ranked for the draft and nowhere do they list this guy similarly with nfl.com. One draft site ranked 438 WR's for the draft he wasn't ranked among them. I like fast guys as much as the next football fan. I prefer guys that can run fast and catch the ball and run the correct route though :)

If he got a tryout and impressed enough to get signed to the 90 man roster on speed alone at his size then this organization has major issues via talent evaluation.

BTW, over the years, I've noticed that it's not uncommon for sites like the ones you mentioned to fail to list some smaller school talent.

Intriguing guy for sure. Off the top of my head I thought of Anthony Armstrong, the tiny return specialist with Washington a few years ago. He could be cheap Tavon insurance if he shows some chops. Could make Tavon expendable and free up some cap space if he doesn't ball out this year. Joe Curley from the Ventura County Star also mentioned Ryan as a standout during the mini camp. Hope he flashes that speed some more.

Now why did I immediately think this guy was from Auburn? :sneaky:

Would love to see this guy impress

My response was more directed at your last statement.

It sure does but all too often people fall in love with speed that can't catch the ball or run a route to get open. It's wonderful to have WR's who can run 4.3's in their underwear. But I'll take a group of guys that run slower that can get open and catch the ball when they're open or in traffic. But yeah 4.3 guys are nice I'll take them on the roster if they can do more than just run fast :)

It's pretty obvious from reading his bio on various sites and checking his numbers, he played in a run heavy offense. "2nd on the team with 27 receptions"? All-Academia in high school? Seems like a kid who played football for an education but to be asked to a tryout with an NFL club, he's got to have some skills more than just speed. Every now and then a midget gets a shot and performs extremely well in the NFL. Darren Sproles comes to mind.

Well well, another 4.3 guy....

Most guys can catch....some can perform in the heat of the moment...some can't...that's what we need to find out. You can teach most of the receiver stuff. You can't teach speed. I get everyone wants guys that can catch, run correct routes...all that...But it's hard to get slow guys open...And Goff needs guys that can get open in 2 seconds or less.

Taking more of long view here but Ryan's best chance may be as a practice squad candidate they can develop to replace Tavon next year. I like TA and love his speed but that contract is a millstone around his neck and it is not commensurate with his production. If TA does not emerge and fill the Jackson role in McVay's scheme he will probably be gone next year. Gadget players cannot be paid Tavon's salary when you have guys like Ryan that can potentially perform many of the same roles for a fraction of the cost.

I know Tavons getting overpaid and hes not a great wr at the moment, but I think it's amusing that we think a UDFA can come in and replace him in a year just bc he has similar height and size.

It's just so unlikely. And if it does, you dont need to be an NFL GM to figure out if you can get the same performance for a fraction of the cost, you go ahead and do that.

Yeah - I think McVay was asked about Ryan ? He brought up He brought up Anthony Armstrongs name about how he made the team w/ Skins.

If he is faster than 4.3 that is real fast.
I don't think this guy could beat out Copper Kupp who was .3 seconds slower.

The good thing is the best players will be kept vs the other way around.A player like this just adds another options

Quite frankly, I believe the people in bold are simply the imaginary people who always seem to show up when someone questions the speed of other players.

Anyway, I liked hearing that he was quick and fast. Some players offer just the one or the other. Don't know if he'll make it or not, as he might even get cut this week, but if he can play he would be a great addition to the offense and teams. Plus, he'd keep the team with a speed element whenever Tavon is out.

SIGHHH - Context is so often overlooked or ignored.

As the title of the thread states we are discussing the possibility of him being a potential gem. I think everyone here realizes the probability is low that Ryan will pan out it but it is not impossible. I have been following football for over 40 years and I have seen obscure guys like Ryan rise out of nowhere so it is not unprecedented. Anyone speculating in 1998 that Kurt Warner would be a Super Bowl winning MVP QB the next season would have been laughed out of a lot of forums.

In my post I specifically used the word potentially and the term "guys like Ryan" when discussing replacing Austin next year because although not a foregone conclusion it is a actually a plausible possibility (maybe not to dolphinlover123) that the Rams may very well be looking for his replacement next year. Where better to find a candidate than someone they started developing a year earlier. I clearly stated I thought his best shot was as a practice squad candidate so it's not like I am saying he even wins a spot on the 53 man roster. This thread is about him being a potential gem so speculating about him earning a role on the team logically progresses to his potential role and since his physical measurables seem be similar to Tavon's the comparison is somewhat obvious (So call me captain obvious, my wife does).

Note: Discussing players on the back end of the roster in mid May is obviously hypothetical of course but that is part of the fun part of being a fan and amusing ourselves (and dolphinlover123) and I will continue to go ahead and do that at my leisure even if I had not received dolphinlover123's permission.

Yo I said "we" bc I am doing the same thing you are doing. I got the context. It's the potential. But the odds of udfas like shakeir even after sitting a year playing like Tavon is so whacky. And we all know this. Hence the amusement.

Anyway, permission granted.

Potential gem?? Are you kidding me?!

I can clearly tell from this photo (not even looking at youtube videos of the guy) that he is the real deal and will break every WR record in the books!

Now where's my blue font again....
