Cortland Finnegan worked out for Patriots
Posted by Josh Alper on October 21, 2015

When the Dolphins released cornerback Cortland Finnegan during the offseason, Finnegan said that he was hanging up his cleats for good and retiring from the NFL.

It seems that his retirement was more conditional than it appeared at the time.

According to multiple reports, Finnegan worked out for the Patriots on Wednesday. No deal was struck with New England and it’s unknown if one was considered, although it’s not surprising that they’d check out possibilities at the position after losing Tarell Brown for the season.

Finnegan played 12 games for the Dolphins last year and his play was several large notches below the efforts that made him an All-Pro for the Titans earlier in his career. He wasn’t much better with the Rams in 2012 and 2013, so his willingness to resume his playing career might not be enough to make it a reality.

Panthers sign Cortland Finnegan

The Panthers have added veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan for the stretch run.

Finnegan worked out for the team last week and the Panthers announced Monday that they have signed him to their 53-man roster. Finnegan played for Miami last season, but has been out of the NFL since the Dolphins released him in the offseason.

That departure did not come as much of a surprise as Finnegan’s play in 2014 showed the same signs of decline that he exhibited in St. Louis during the two previous years. Finnegan seemed to agree that the game had passed him by because he said he was retiring after getting dropped by the Dolphins, but there’s nothing like interest from undefeated teams (the Patriots also worked him out recently) to make you think twice.

Carolina has been stretched a bit thin at corner the last two weeks with Charles Tillman out of the lineup and Collin Jones has struggled in the slot with Bene’ Benwikere moving outside to take over for Tillman, who is expected to miss more time. They’ll hope for more from Finnegan as they try to continue the league’s longest current winning streak.

I think they must really, really be short at CB depth...He has been done for at least a couple of years IMO...
