The St. Louis Rams Community Player of the Week is guard Barrett Jones.

Drafted in the fourth round from Alabama, Barrett was part of two National Championship teams and started three BCS National Championship games. Individually, he was twice recognized as an All-American and won the Outland Trophy for the best lineman in college football as well as the Remington Trophy, which is awarded to the best center. In addition to all of these awards and accolades, Barrett had a strong reputation for his dedication to community service. Now with the St. Louis Rams, Barrett plays guard and center on the field and community advocate off the field. As a rookie, Barrett has consistently built upon his support for the local community including attending two separate charitable events last week alone.

Monday evening, Barrett, along with a large group of his teammates, came out for the 11th Annual Taste of the NFL. The event benefits the St. Louis Foodbank and the St. Louis Sports Commission through an evening of sampling great cuisine from local restaurants, bidding on items in a silent auction and mingling with players like Barrett.

The next morning Barrett visited Sappington Elementary School as part of the Rams staff day of service and the American Red Cross’ Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. Barrett joined with the Rams staff and Edward Jones associates to help students sign more than 8,000 holiday cards for active and retired service men and women and he also talked to them about the importance of giving back to your community.

This summer, Barrett participated in the Ram’s signature service event, a playground build at Washington Elementary. There he worked side by side with his fellow teammates and Rams staff members to build a jungle gym, install basketball hoops and make an outdoor area for children to enjoy. In September, Barrett volunteered at the Make-A-Wish Celebrity Server Dinner. During the event, he competed with his teammates as he collected tip donations by signing autographs and taking photos with guests. By the end of the evening, Barrett had helped the Rams raise enough money to fund 56 wishes for local children facing life-threatening diseases.

Barrett also supported the Rams Crucial Catch campaign with the American Cancer Society to promote the early detection and prevention of Breast Cancer. In October, Barrett attended an employee rally at Ameren Missouri to discuss the importance of the campaign and encourage people to join in support of the initiative.

“When we drafted Barrett, we knew we were getting a special player with an incredible passion for community service,” said Molly Higgins, Rams vice president of corporate communications/civic affairs. “But it’s always nice to get unsolicited third party endorsements like we did with Barrett. As soon as we drafted him, I received an email from our contact at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, who we have developed a great relationship with over the years, and the email read, ‘Barrett is incredible. He’s the kind of guy that others gravitate to. I can’t say enough about him. The Rams are lucky to have him.’ Already in his rookie year, that has proven true and we have great optimism on what the future holds.”
