Can LA Rams WR Brandin Cooks stretch the field in 2020?

The LA Rams were a little tight-fisted when it came to planning for the 2019 offensive line, but the team seemed to have an nearly endless supply of both funds and enthusiasm when a skill player was up for a new contract. And so it went that the Rams locked in WR Brandin Cooks to a long-term deal, and in return locked up the LA Rams until 2023 to the receiver.

The plan was sound. locking in a burst speed receiver to keep safeties locked into playing over the top plays, which would give teammate running back Todd Gurleyfewer defenders. That type of speedy receiver need not be the target on a passing play, merely the threat of the deep pass is enough to counter any defensive plans to put eight defenders in the box. But defenses have figured out the weakness to that strategy.

Cooks, as fast as he is, needs time to run 20+ yards downfield. Speedy edge rushers need to rush just five to eight yards to get to quarterback Jared Goff. Through the 2018 season, Cooks was the faster of the two racers. But in 2019, edge rushers got the upper hand. In 2018, Cooks saw 989 offensive snaps, 117 targets, 80 catches and 1,204 yards. In 2019, Cooks saw just 701 offensive snaps, 72 targets, 42 catches and just 583 yards.

In 2018, Cooks was targeted nearly 12 percent of the time, resulting in 10.3 yards per target, and 15 yards per reception. In 2019, Cooks was targeted just 10.7 percent of the time, resulting in 8.1 yards per target and just 13.9 yards per catch. Cooks production dropped across the board.

Making matters that much worse is the fact that Cooks dropped from 90 percent of the offensive snaps in 2018 to just 63 percent of the offensive snaps in 2019. Not only did the Rams need to shorten the time for Cooks routes to develop, but the wide receiver was not on the field for nearly 40 percent of the offensive plays.

The concept is sound. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks can stretch the field if he can stay on the field and if the quarterback has time. Neither was the case in 2019. So if the argument to keep a highly compensated Cooks on the Rams roster is primarily based on “we need him to stretch the field”, perhaps the Rams need to do a much better job in 2020 to ensure that truly is the case.

Otherwise, why have Cooks on the roster earning nearly $17 million ? That is much like buying a NASCAR racing car to keep in the garage. Fast players, like fast cars, are only valuable when they are moving quickly.

One of the concerning things about Cooks in 2019 was he wasn't running by DB's like in '18. I saw guys running step for step with him consistently. It's not like he's the best at contested catches as is, so he needs that separation so he can complete the catch.
Make or break year for Cooks. I'm pulling for the guy, he needs to study every snap of Ike and Torry IMO. Time to win on smarts and not just speed.

Cooks can blame a limp dick OL that couldn't couldn't control the LOS for his down year. Goff had no time for a 7 step drop nearly every play. Whitworth and Havenstien were exposed as too slow to counter quick edge rushers. The interior OL was a sieve, forcing McVay to to use TE's as linemen and keep rolling Goff out of the pocket, no time to set his feet for a deep pass.

Kromer and McVay HAVE to find the combination OL guys that can dominate the LOS, or at least hold their own and not get constantly pushed back like they did last season.

It all starts up front an you can have all the playmakers you want, but without a stout OL to give your QB time, its all for nought.

Cook’s skill set is pretty specific, if he gets doubled he’s not so good, if it’s a physical corner not so good, and to top it off, not so good with contested catches. I don’t know if he can be a factor without either an elite wr, kinda like fuller in Houston, or a home run hitter at rb, like vintage TG.
Is it time to draft a wr? Woods and Kupp are excellent just not great speed and Reynolds I’m not sure what to make of at this point. Regardless changes are coming to the wr group Kupp will want paid and Cooks isn’t particularly effective anymore.

Love you @bubbaramfan because everything comes down to the Offensive Line and if have a point, but Cooks and his concussion history is starting to affect his play and you could see that after he came back, he was tentative and was playing not to get hurt. Seem to improve in the end as he made a nice TD reception against San Francisco, however, I'm concerned he will not be able to get past his injuries and one more will send him out the door.

Cooks tries to protect himself going low after catching the pass, but still gets crushed in the head and IMO a great offensive line won't be able to limit that. Cooks needs an injury free year from the neck up and his confidence might come back, but until that happens, Cooks is going to be playing scared IMHO.

He was definitely a different wideout after he returned from the concussion. Say what you want about Cooks struggling with physical DBs, but he's always been a smart player. When he returned it looked like his head was in the clouds, just very strange.

After an offseason I am sure he'll start strong for 2020. Question is whether he can avoid another concussion, but that limits his route tree so teams will just put a CB on him with outside technique and dare him to run the crossers and posts.

Way I see Cooks is the Rams have a cheap wideout to spell him if necessary in his final season in horns (Rams have an out after this season). If he plays well great. If not well let's give JRey his shot and cut bait after the season.

Let's hope Cooks can stay away from another concussion. He still can be very effective for the Rams. He had some mental lapses before last year's concussion. He makes contested catches but, not on high jump balls. I think he is open when Goff goes to other options a lot. The entire offense was off last year not just Cooks. Rams have to roll with Cooks this year and be ready for when he gets hurt. I like Reynolds as a 4th WR but, he could be trade bait if they don't plan on resigning him next year. Probably need to keep him. Webster could be the next man up just in case. Rams aren't going to draft a WR high this year. A speed guy that is a little raw later in the draft might be a good idea.

Brandon Cooks himself was unable to produce much separation from his defenders last season. Even when he did manage to get a small degree of detachment .... Cooks ability to make that deep catch was not there.

Then you mix in that this Ram OL will most likely be the most inexperienced OL's in the NFL. Next element is he has a QB who needs to be unmolested with room to step up to make those deep throws that stretch the field. This concoction will not function under these circumstances.

Answer.....No.

As others have stated, depends on improved pass protection from our OL.

I hope to see Nsimba Webster displace JoJo Natson as our primary returner and open another roster spot. Webster can also fly and it would be interesting to see him getting a few of Cooks' snaps next season as a potential prelude to Cooks becoming a 2021 CAP casualty which would open some much needed CAP space.
