Can we cut Barron while he's recovering from shoulder surgery?

It definitely seems like many are divided on the Barron front. I like what he brings to the team. However, my biggest concern with him is not talent, it’s health. If he is going to be healthy then I’m on board with the Rams retaining him. If he’s going to be a liability in terms of health then the Rams are better off going a different direction. Whatever decision this team makes I’m on board with since they are privy to more information than I.

If you have your own personal agenda that's ok, everybody is entitled to their opnion no matter how wrong they are. Your argument that Ogletree and Barron are horrible, average, or not worthy of keeping isn't backed up by facts. This was produced on October 23, 2017. If I had my PFF subscription I could show you the whole season. If anybody else has that that would be helpful. Anyways, I know you don't like PFF, these metrics and other statistical data our WHAT OUR F.O. USES HEAVILY NOW if you like what has happened with the roster and results in the last year it's because of statistical analysis and we employ one of the bigger stats team in the league if not the biggest.

IF we had a NT worth his salt a lot of the issues with Tree or Barron would be fixed and having more athletic coverage and to the spot LB"s would definitely be game changing.

I will admit that they both struggled a bit but thinking or hoping a thumper ILB that can cover better than either one of them is a big chance to release somebody and taking on negative cap space to be iffy. I'm defiantly open to trying to acquire or draft a replacement.

Oh goodie! Citing PFF ratings as proof that's such a winning argument! I watched the games and continually saw both our ILB struggle like I said against the run and the pass. They sometimes made corrections at half and were better. Cite PFF all you want it's not going to change what we all saw when we watched the games. Blame the lack of a NT all you want we need to upgrade that as well as add a run stopping ILB.

I agree totally, if they do decide to cut Barron for anything it would be health reasons than any other reasons. Honestly I don't see our FO cutting him whatsoever, this year at least. I see him and Quinn next year being expendable.

So your saying your NFL analysis and insight is more appropriate better than anybody else that is actually paid to provide stats? You obviously didn't read my post fully or you would have read the part about the Rams FO that not just uses PFF but their own stat indicators and rankings that are very similar to PFF's. Tell me, do you think our FO is doing a shit job then?

PFF is the same site that ranked Jimmy Garappolo, Tyrod Taylor, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Blake Bortles and Dak Prescott were all better than Jared Goff last year. Tell me again why I would care about their rankings when watching games shows me that is obviously not the case. As for the Rams front office don't put words in my mouth or make things up about them and my opinion of them. Nice assumptions. BTW they've said they're using analytics they didn't say they were using PFF's specifically or if they did something else. Another great assumption.

Damn it's like talking to a wall here. The FO and team therein use stats, formulas, and analytics very similar to how PFF gets their numbers. So if your going to bag on PFF and not our FO then that's extremely hypocritical.

Your saying Goff had a better year (2016) than Dak Prescott last year? or Jameis Winston? SMH I'm done.

I've always considered PFF like a poster on any old forum. They put together some pretty great stuff, seems to really be knowledgeable about the topic at hand even if I disagree... and probably goes home at night and cries about their loneliness.

What the hell does 2016 have to do with anything we were talking about. Yeah we’re done all right haha.

Why are we talking about cutting our players when they're just out from under the knife?

Tell me how knowing these rules will help you sleep tonight?

Next thing we know we're going to see the question "Barron just got administered by the anesthesiologist.....can we cut him before the doctor cuts him? Or do NFL rules prevent that?"

Barron’s miss tackle against Atlanta was huge.

I like Barrón and hope we keep him.
But I also think the OP had a good question, can he be cut if he’s injured.
Don’t know if that’s been answered

Alec Ogletree take Barrons spot and we can sign one of many free agents or draft somebody. Free agents that have been listed before are Todd Davis, Avery Williamson, Ramik Wilson (who started for KC when Derrick Johnson was injured) and Demario Davis. Not all exactly sexy house hold or all pro names but all good run defenders that we need.

Lots of draft picks led by Rashaan Evans, Mike McCray, Micah Kiser and Leighton Vander Esch. There are others including Jrry's guy Griffin as well.

We need a run defender at ILB, having 2 guys that are under sized is a huge part of the reason we gave up 4.7 YPC and so many huge runs. Nobody dislikes Barron. But if we don't fix our run defense adding a stud at CB like Peters with resigning Joyner and extending Donald won't make a difference with teams running up the gut on us at will.

My questions wWould be does Alex Ogletree still call please, and how much does barons contract play into all this.

Quinn's transition to a 3-4 OLB is easier because in Wade's 34 scheme the OLB shares the same responsibilities as a 4-3 DE, only difference is that they seldom drop into coverage. Even changing the 34 scheme would still put Tree's weaknesses on display. He can't set the edge, and he can't shed blockers. He might not be used that way, but that's not going to stop the offense from running at his side . IMO, the best position for Tree is Barron's.

I think Wade & Barry have a handle on this whole thing. If Wade did not like Alex Ogletree he would not have been resigned ?

Barron he has leads backed up as a good player. He really likes him , but I think his injuries play apart of his future along with his salary number.
—Quinn is a question mark as well ? I think with Tru being let go & Peters cap is a big benefit.

My understanding is that a player can't be released until he's been cleared by a doctor. Barron had shoulder surgery which is fairly routine, so unless something went wrong and he needs further surgery, he'll be cleared, then the Rams can cut him if they so choose. I believe a player can only be offered an injury settlement within 5 days of being placed on IR, but again, that's not likely to happen in 2018 unless something went terribly wrong. jmo.

Barron’s miss tackle against Atlanta was huge.

I remember Ogletree missed a big tackle on the screen that would have stopped Atlanta 3 and out deep in their territory. Another high tackle attempt.

Ogletree has missed a few big plays. Those are the plays that hurt.

Totally agree gents. It’s mind boggling people want to cut Barron, take on a huge negative cap hit, and replace him with a further cap hit that I seriously doubt has a chance to be a top ILB as Barrón. It makes zero sense. Who else is going to come in and rate as the top 3 in pass and top 7 in run? I’ll tell you who... nobody.

I don’t mind drafting somebody deeper into the draft to develop or a guy for depth but what blows mind is our NT (or lack there of) is the sole cause of blockers getting to our second level to cause those big gashes.

How about we fix the main problem and get a beast of a NT instead of trying to fix a problem by causing another problem?
I'm pretty sure we actually save 2 metric butt tons of cap space by cutting him. Not "a huge negative cap hit, and replace him with a further cap hit".

  1. 21. Mark Barron, Los Angeles Rams ( as 4-3 OLB )

    Coverage: 19/25
    Run Defense: 17/25
    Pass Rush: 7/15
    Tackling: 17/25
    Position Value: 7/10
    Overall Grade: 67/100

Mark Barron gets credit for saving his career by moving to linebacker, but that should not warp the perception of how he actually plays the position. Barron, a former safety, often played too hesitantly unless he knew for certain he could hit the gap clean and get the ball-carrier. More times than not, he waited for plays to come to him. But his speed and experience at safety made him a helpful coverage piece all across the field.

  1. 44. Alec Ogletree, Los Angeles Rams ( as an ILB )

    Pass Defense: 16/25
    Run Defense: 16/25
    Pass Rush: 9/15
    Tackling: 15/25
    Position Value: 7/10
    Overall Grade: 63/100

Alec Ogletree is one of the great mysteries of inside linebacker play. The Rams experienced immediate turnaround with new head coach Sean McVay. Defensively, Wade Phillips has taken a Rams defense with intriguing players and made them even better.

Ogletree, however, continues to be exposed as an interior defender each week. He struggles to take on contact square and often racks up tackle numbers downfield. Nonetheless, the Rams signed him to a four-year extension worth $42 million, suggesting they see nothing wrong with his play.

Here are some grades from "NFL1000 Scouts" via Bleacher Report. Their overall grade for Ogletree and Barron are similar to that of PFF in that they had Barron rated higher than Ogletree for last season. With Barron rated a tad better versus the run. I bring this up because it seems that some will not accept PFF as any type of valid grade of a players play. I don't use it religiously because I understand that there are different ways to interpret what responsibility a player has on a certain play. And, on a certain number of them, 3 different people could come up with 3 different answers. But, I think that is the minority of plays in question, When they track a defender on 300 + plays from scrimmage, there is some truth in what is being tracked and you can see differences in players when compared.
Another reason to mention it is to question the rationale for "Ogletree is the starting ILB, signed long term by McVay/Phillips, and Barron will be gone because he's too small and not a good fit next to Ogletree....and therefore because McVay signed him it must be good and not questioned." If you think Barron should be replaced, whether it's being too small, injury prone, not a good fit, etc., shouldn't you be asking the same questions about Ogletree? Ogletree was given a contract that makes him one of the 3 or 4 highest paid ILB's in the NFL. His total value is about the same as Bobby Wagner but has more guaranteed dollars than Wager ; 45% guaranteed versus 22%. Also, Barron was given too large of a contract. I do agree he's overpaid for his position. But, we all question the contract extension of Tavon Austin? I'm sure some of us questioned Barron's contract at the time at the time he was extended.... franchising Trumaine 2 seasons in a row? Ogleetree has not played anywhere near the value of his contract. If the Rams can upgrade Barron's position why not Ogletree? Yeah....it's too big of a CAP hit, I know. Barron will probably be gone, I get that too. I'm not grandstanding for Barron as much as I want a great LB corp and I think they both can be upgraded.
