Busy First Week for Rams Rookies

Following a seemingly endless road to the 2014 NFL Draft, the Rams rookies first arrived in Earth City and began to get adjusted to the professional side of the football business.

Jeff Fisher leads the Rams rookies through a skill development session at Rams Park

Before the youngsters touched the practice field, they met with a huge gathering of local and national media. Seventh-round selection Michael Sam may have been the biggest drawing card, but head coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead made sure that all of the team’s picks received fair time. Head trainer Reggie Scott then administered physicals to the draftees and rookie free agents, followed by an introduction to the facility.

Players found their lockers, got fitted for equipment and stared in awe at the many features of the weight room: thousands of pounds of free weights, stationary cycles, StairMasters, treadmills, elliptical machines, ropes, medicine balls, kettle balls and much more. On Thursday, the Rams’ rookie orientation session – or skill development program – kicked off. Drill work, as always, was heavily emphasized. Players pushed one another around in 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills.

The team set Friday aside for the same purpose, with Fisher and his staff focusing on teaching technique and basic fundamentals, even though reporters only watched a conditioning period capped off by 20-yard touch-and-go sprints from positional groups.

The veterans now join the rookies as St. Louis prepares for its organized team activities (OTAs), which start on June 3.
