Kubiak has spoken with free-agent quarterback Johnny Manziel as a potential fit for the team down the line, according to two sources connected to the team.

Kubiak and Manziel both are former Texas A&M quarterbacks. But before the Broncos would make any move on Manziel, the sources said, the Broncos want to see how his pending legal issues and potential NFL discipline are resolved.

The Dallas police department referred a domestic violence case against Manziel to a grand jury in late February. The grand jury was to consider whether to charge the former Cleveland Browns quarterback on allegations that he attacked his ex-girlfriend. But the grand jury ended its term last week without hearing the misdemeanor assault case against Manziel, the Dallas County District Attorney's Office recently told KTVT.

A new grand jury is expected to be seated within a week to 10 days. A misdemeanor assault charge carries a maximum punishment of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Regardless of whether he is charged, the NFL is expected to discipline Manziel, and a suspension is considered likely, according to the sources.

Should the Broncos sign Manziel -- and that could be weeks or months away -- Denver, according to the sources, would do so with stipulations that would include mandatory counseling and possible clinical work for Manziel.

Manziel has been living in Los Angeles, and there are those, according to the sources, who are concerned about how he's faring there and in general. The Broncos would want to protect themselves knowing Manziel's history. Manziel had a 10-week stay in a rehab facility in Pennsylvania for undisclosed reasons starting in January of 2015.

On Thursday morning at the annual Boy Scouts of America breakfast at the downtown Pepsi Center where Kubiak was the keynote speaker, he said the Broncos are focused on the two quarterbacks currently on the roster.

"We need to stay focused on the guys on our team right now,'' Kubiak said, referring to Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian.

The Broncos also have had trade discussions with the San Francisco 49ersregarding Colin Kaepernick but would need the quarterback to agree to a pay cut from his scheduled $11.9 million salary for 2016, a sticking point that has stalled talks. Denver also is expected to take a long look at the quarterbacks in the draft.

Broncos, no plans to sign Manziel

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/04/07/broncos-have-no-plans-to-sign-manziel/

Yes, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has spoken to free-agent quarterback Johnny Manziel. No, the Broncos have no plans to sign him.

ESPN has reported that Kubiak has spoken to Manziel regarding the potential fit between Manziel and the defending Super Bowl champions. Mike Klis of 9News.com in Denver has reported — and PFT has confirmed — that the Broncos have no plans to sign Manziel. As Klis has reported, and PFT has confirmed, the Broncos have not even discussed signing Manziel.

So why did Kubiak and Manziel speak? Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the communication arose from the fact that both men played college football at Texas A&M. Also, the conversation occurred at or about the time that the Browns cut Manziel, not recently.

On one hand, the Broncos should embrace the perception that Manziel is a viable candidate to join the team, given that this could break the lingering three-way game of chicken over whether quarterback Colin Kaepernick will take less money, and whether the 49ers will pay part of his fully-guaranteed salary to facilitate a deal. On the other hand, the Broncos realize that Manziel currently is a long way from being ready to play in the NFL. He has a pending criminal case in Dallas, where an indictment for domestic assault could be coming. Also, he continues to live a public lifestyle that feeds the impression that he needs to return to rehab, where he spent 10 weeks in 2015.

If Manziel gets the off-field allegation behind him and otherwise cleans up his act, the plans of the Broncos (and possibly other teams, like the Cowboys) could change. For now, the Broncos have no interest in Manziel and no plan to sign him.

As Klis puts it, not even a resolution of Manziel’s pending issues will change things. “Johnny Football won’t be a Bronco,” Klis says.

Johnny Manziel reminds me of Paul Crewe from the Longest Yard. Except Paul was actually successful, even if it was fictional.

Good lord Elway is getting desperate. Having said that the Broncos would be one of thee best teams that d-bag could play for. A ready made super bowl team for him to step into and if he kept straight for a season (well, didn't get caught at least) I could see that moron in the playoffs. But fortunately he's an idiot and he'll screw it up before that happens, if not already.

Someone threw that story out there as a smokescreen to gain leverage in the Krapernick negotiations. To get his side to panic and drop their numbers. :notsure:

I don't see Johnny Tricycle playing in the NFL again. And if the Grand Jury brings charges he's fucked, and rightfully so.
