By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Last week, the St. Louis Rams quietly worked with center Scott Wells on executing a new contract with the intent to lower his salary cap figure over the final two years of his deal.

The sides agreed to a new deal on June 9, which gave the Rams a little cap relief while also allowing Wells the opportunity to recoup most of the original money if he meets all of the necessary incentives.

Here's a breakdown of the two remaining years on Wells' contract with a look at how the numbers changed with the new deal.

2014
Base salary: $1 million
Roster bonus: $1.65 million (already paid)
Additional bonuses: Can earn up to $850,000 in game-day active bonuses paid out at a rate of $53,125 per game. Can also earn up to $2 million in bonuses for playing time, team performance and a Pro Bowl berth.
Cap value: $4.287 million
Previous cap value: $6.5 million
Cap savings: $2.2125 million

2015
Base salary: $2 million
Roster bonus: $1.75 million (to be paid if he's on the roster on the third day of the league year)
Additional bonuses: Up to $1 million in game-day active bonuses paid out at a rate of $62,500 per game. Can also earn up to $2 million in bonuses for playing time, team performance and a Pro Bowl berth.
Cap value: $4.75 million
Previous cap value: $6.5 million
Cap savings: $1.75 million

Love the incentive based deals with an injury prone player.

Sounds like he had a good chance of being cut if he didn't restructure. Good deal for both sides. It's pretty evident he wanted to remain a Ram.

It seems that the Rams are hoping to retain him for the next two years. That doesn't speak to well of Barnes does it?
