Breaking down Kenny Britt's contract
By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- As is many times the case at this time of year, the initial contract numbers that are released for free agents are bloated beyond their actual value.

So when it was originally reported that the St. Louis Rams had signed receiver Kenny Britt to a two-year contract worth $14 million, it raised some eyebrows. Britt had been the Rams' most productive receiver in 2014 but certainly not to the level of a player who would average $7 million per season.

Of course, as the actual contract details came out, it became much clearer that his contract was closer to what you'd expect. While Britt could reach that $14 million total, he'd have to accomplish feats he's never achieved in the NFL to do so.

Instead, Britt's deal is really worth $9.15 million over two years with $4.05 million guaranteed. That guaranteed money all comes in the first year, which means the Rams could easily get out from under the second season if Britt is unable to produce again.

Here's the full breakdown of Britt's contract:

2015

Base salary: $2.55 million (fully guaranteed)

Roster bonus: $1.5 million (fully guaranteed)

Additional bonus: $250,000 (workout bonus)

Cap hit: $4.3 million

2016

Base salary: $3.6 million

Roster bonus: $1 million

Additional bonus: $250,000 (workout bonus)

Cap hit: $4.85 million

Notes: Britt can void the contract for the 2016 season he reaches certain statistical benchmarks. He also could increase the total value of the contract into the range of $14 million if he's able to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, among other achievements. For the record, Britt has never reached 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
