So I decided to break down Goff's incomplete passes during Week 1.. This isn't something I'll do each week, but since he only threw 8 incompletions, I wanted to see what happened.

Here is the drive summary:

First Drive
Goff goes 3/5
(1st Quarter) 13:31 - The "target" is Higbee but Goff was just throwing it away. Not really sure why, it looks like he may have had some options, including Higbee himself, but I think there's something he saw he didn't like because it was a throwaway.

(1st Quarter) 12:53 - Goff goes through his progressions before trying to hit Kupp for the first down. He threw the ball right to the marker, but Kupp failed to get both feet inbounds (only had one foot). Good throw, maybe a little more in bounds to help Kupp stay in bounds easier, but that's being pretty nit-picky.

Second Drive
Goff goes 2-2

Third Drive
Goff goes 0-1

(2nd Quarter) 14:16 - It's 3rd and forever after some penalties, so the Colts are playing the deep pass. Goff recognizes Brown getting beaten in front of him, and throws to Gurley, his checkdown. Defender is all over Gurley and he more or less falls down. A flag probably could have been thrown, Todd is certainly looking for one. Good pass nonetheless, had Gurley been able to freely catch it he has enough space to turn up field and get some decent YAC. Defender slowed him down enough it falls incomplete.

Fourth Drive
Goff goes 2-3

(2nd Quarter) 11:06 - Playaction pass, does a good job of drawing in the linebackers, Rob and Brown get beaten (shocker) and Goff has to roll out to the right and try to hit Woods. He throws the ball beyond the first down marker, but it's a bit wobbly so it's low, too short for Woods (although Woods could have dived for it and caught it).. Not really a great pass, but understandable given he was being chased. I liked what he was doing, found the open receiver for the first down, just needs to execute a little better. Good decision.

Fith Drive
Goff goes 4-5 with a TD

(2nd Quarter) 6:15 - Quick hitter pass to Woods short, Woods dropped it, think he heard footsteps. Good pass otherwise though.

Sixth Drive
Goff goes 2-3

(2nd Quarter) 1:16 - Designed rollout to the right, Goff is being chased and throws to his outlet receiver, Carrier, who doesn't play the ball very well and catches it out of bounds. I'll count that as him still being new, and still being a little raw. He's the third TE for a reason.

Seventh Drive
Goff goes 2-2

Eight Drive
Goff goes 1-2

(3rd Quarter) 4:44 - Goff throws deep to Kupp and hits him right on the hands. Kupp doesn't follow the ball in and makes one of his rare drops. That'll happen less the longer Kupp is in the league.

Ninth Drive
Goff goes 2-2

Tenth Drive
Goff goes 1-2

(4th Quarter) 9:47 - Goff throws an absolutely beautiful rainbow pass to Cooper that unfortunately lands long.. Not sure if Cooper ran the correct route or let off or something, because the ball drops right next to the sideline, which would normally be an absolutely perfect ball placement, but Cooper is about 5 yards behind and more inside. Maybe Goff just thinks Cooper is faster. If Sammy Watkins is running that route, it's a catch and probably a touch down. This was Goff's last incomplete pass for the day.

Eleventh Drive
Goff goes 2-2 - This was Goff's last drive.

Goff was incredibly accurate on Sunday. Removing the throw away pass to Higbee, Goff was 21 for 28, good for 75% completion. However if you count passes that were thrown to the correct place and were counted as incomplete due to either the receiver dropping it or making a mistake (Kupp and Carrier both could have made an incomplete pass a complete pass if they were more aware of their feet) then Goff went 25 for 28 good for an 89% completion rate.

Even with the remaining three incomplete passes, one of them should have likely been a defensive penalty on the receiver, one of them Goff was being chased out of the pocket, and the last one looks like the pass was correct but the receiver wasn't there (miscommunication, or what, hard to say).

Basically this entire post says one thing. Goff was very accurate with the football on Sunday.

I'm still in shock that this team finally has a legitimate passing game. Great ball placement too. When Bradford was here (he's better at this now I think), he'd always gun the ball at the receiver & force them to stop in their tracks. I remember a lot of times he'd throw behind them as their momentum carried them past the ball - sometimes they'd still manage to catch it but he killed their YAC. Goff leads the receiver with the ball, great anticipation of the route. Even with the throw away passes he was one of the best QB's last Sunday in ratings. Never saw 1 ball where I thought it was in danger of being intercepted.
A lot of this I think is play design - great use of the play-action & draw plays. One play was a designed QB keeper! Goff has "wheels" - they might be tricycle wheels but he got some yards lol. But still this throws the D off & keeps them guessing between pass & run. Even involved Tavon on some fakes & keepers, he had a nice 9 yd run.
But Goff.... I remember seeing him at the combine, it was obvious who was the most accurate passer - Goff seemed to nail every pass.

The first pass was crap.

Then one time you say Brown & Hav get beat . Lmao -- but Goff has time to throw.
--Blame the offensive line. He should have made the throw.

Yes -- it does show how well he is playing & making reads. Sometimes it is best to live to play another down.

Good break down.

Nice review.

I see only 3 bad passes.

Kupp on the first drive short of the marker. That one was way underthrown.

Woods on fourth drive. This was on the run. Hard pass but could have made the throw.

Woods on Fifth drive. I think Goff threw too far to Woods left. That is on Goff. Great hands might have been able to snag it but that's a bad pass.

I think the pass to Carrier where he went out of bounds was on Carrrier. He was unaware of where he was.

Overall great passes by Goff. Some really accurate throws. Great protection for the most part as well.

I mean, if we're splitting hairs on passes, he's lucky Goff pulled down that one-handed grab on the sideline...

But I was very pleased with him across the board.

The throw was short, Kupp breaks his route at the 28-yard line(1 yard past the 1st down marker) and he had to come back to make the catch. He goes out of bounds a little bit past the 30-yard line, even if Kupp caught the pass it would've been short.

It was Hav's man who got beat, Higbee's on the far side, Brown tried to help out Hav but he was a little too late. Wobbly ball, there were a few like that, the ball hit the ground 2 yards short of Woods.

Goff will occasionally throw a seriously ugly ball, a wobbly duck nowhere near the target. He did it throughout his time at Cal. But for every ugly duckling, he would make 2 or 3 throws that are just absolutely insanely accurate.

Goff played his best game a a pro, which is not saying much at all, but the OL gave him all DAY back there. I need to see how he reacts to a faster pocket. If he is able to improve that area, he will be fun to watch this year. I really liked the use of the 2-3 step play action quick hitter passes like the ones to Watkins and Woods early on. THOSE types of plays will help beat the blitz if executed properly. We really need Gurley and the OL to get this run game going though Yikes....

When grading the game, I saw things pretty much the way you did. The only difference would be the last throw. I felt like he threw the ball away because of how well Kupp was covered but downgraded him because he had a better option to throw to.

People that wonder about his ability under pressure, I had him accurate enough to complete 5 of 7 when under pressure after protection broke down. Those numbers disregard throws that I thought he threw away. I felt he threw 2 away when under pressure. His ability to throw accurately against pressure isn't really a question in my mind. He was great at it in college, which is why I liked him as a prospect. The real question is decision making against pressure because his reads were more defined in college and easier to progress through. At least that is what I have heard about the type of offense that he played in. So can he process the reads in the NFL quick enough and be confident enough in his decision making to make the type of throws against pressure that he did in college? If he can, he will be a great QB but that is the part that takes the longest time to develop. That is why there needs to be patience with him if he has a bad day with decision making against pressure.

Nice job on the break down.

What stood out to me was the fact Goff only had 2 incomplete passes in the second half

In a closer game that would have made a big difference

Thanks for the work in compiling this! I haven't had the time to go thru the entire list. I did re-watch the play quoted above and I think it would be useful to add that Saffold and Whitworth both got beat in pass protection, and the penetration by Saffold's man's prevented Goff from fully stepping into the throw.

great post....I would love a comparison against a better defense....maybe not Washington....but a Seahawk game...or Arizona.
