Three years ago, the Buffalo Bills traded their first-round pick, along with their first and fourth-round picks the following year, to move up five spots in the 2014 draft and select Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who was considered the best receiver in the class.

Watkins went on to set franchise rookie records with 65 catches for 982 yards during his first season in the NFL, and also scored six touchdowns. He's struggled with repeated foot injuries since then, though, and hasn't quite progressed as the Bills expected when they surrendered so much value to get him on their team.

And so, on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Bills will not pick up the fifth-year option on Watkins' rookie contract.

Because he was the No. 4 overall pick, Watkins would have been in line for a fifth-year option salary of $19,935,603, per Spotrac. Given his significant health issues (he's played only 21 of 36 games the last two years and has had two surgeries on it) and relatively stagnant production, it's not a surprise the Bills aren't willing to pay him that much money.

With new leadership in place at head coach (former Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott) and general manager (TBD), it's certainly possible the organization now feels less loyalty to Watkins than before and could look elsewhere. Then again, there's nothing stopping them from giving him a new contract (or just using the franchise tag) next season if he stays healthy and productive this season. They just didn't want to be on the hook for nearly $20 million if that didn't work out.

Oh, no. I'd keep Barron and the pick for two reasons:

1. Watkins is extremely injury-prone.

2. I don't want to hear RFIP's fanboy screams.

OK, I was being too generous, ... make it a 4'th.

Another lock as franchise changing pick who simply was not. Nothing is a lock in the NFL.

Screw rgat a 4th rounder for him no more! I would offer that to them. I'm sure they would be open to discussion at this point.

I don't get the Watkins hate. He has put up great numbers in Buffalo without a QB. If you factor in the nagging foot injury, these numbers look pretty good-
  • Year 1 - 54 rec/959 yards/8 TDs
  • Year 2 - 79/1198/10
  • Year 3 - 41/580/2
The funny thing is. Those are Julio Jones' numbers and situation. Watkins stats and situation is virtually identical. In fact, when Jones came up for his 5th year option, a lot of people questioned guaranteeing another year for a guy who had multiple foot problems and only played five games the previous year. Here's Watkins stats. Keep in mind he hasn't had Matt Ryan throwing to him. He's had EJ Manuel, Kyle Orton and Tyrod Taylor.
  • Year 1 - 65/982/6
  • Year 2 - 60/1037/9
  • Year 3 - 28/430/2
He is 23 years old. The same age as Cooper Kupp. The Bills are making a serious mistake in not exercising his option. They'll be able to franchise him next year. That will only cost them around $3 million extra, but the year after that, he'll be 25 and almost certainly be the highest paid WR in the NFL (and probably not playing for Buffalo)

Sure he's a bit injury prone, but Watkins is a good receiver when healthy and he is still better than anything the Rams have. Y'all are acting like we have the Giants receiving corps or something. I'd be more than happy to have Watkins on the team, for a reasonable price.
